After lots of rain and gloomy days the sun has been spotted, the days are getting longer and the anemones have started flowering!
I started these anemones back in October, which seems so long ago now. Anemones grow from corms, which must be soaked first so that they plump up and start the process of growth. Previously I planted my anemone corms directly outside or in the tunnel after soaking, but this year I decided to presprout them. This involves planting them in a seed tray with a thin layer of compost in a cool area until they begin to sprout. Only then did I plant they to their final spot, this year all in the polytunnel.
This presprouting has a few benefits. This year it was helpful for me because I hadn't got the beds ready in time so I was able to start the process of growth while I worked on the prep work i.e. its great for the disorganised. It also means that diseased, rotten or unviable corms can be removed before they are planted out, saving valuable bed space and reducing the spread of disease to healthy soils. This is especially helpful because anemones are prone to rotting. Presprouting also means that flowers come earlier in the season!
It's fantastic to see them arriving now, and I'm excited to arrange with them!!
