🚗 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗱 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝗯𝗲 𝘁𝗮𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝗻 𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹?

By Transition Year and fifth year, many young people are beginning to think seriously about driving.

But even before they get behind the wheel, they are already road users every day.

🚶 As pedestrians
🚲 As cyclists
🛴 On e-scooters
🚗 As passengers in friends’ cars
🚌 On public transport
🚘 And eventually, as drivers themselves.

There is now a call for universal road-safety and driver-theory education in Irish secondary schools, rather than relying only on schools choosing to deliver existing resources.

One proposal would see dedicated RSA officers visiting schools, Youthreach centres and youth services to provide road-safety education directly to young people.

The RSA already has programmes covering issues including:

🚦 road rules
⚡ speed
📱 distraction
🍺 alcohol and drugs
🔒 seatbelts
🚶 vulnerable road users
🚗 learning to drive

A new Junior Cycle Road Safety Matters programme is also available to post-primary schools from this September.

We talk a lot about preparing young people academically for adulthood.

Perhaps knowing how to keep themselves — and other people — safe on the road should be part of that preparation too.

👇 Would you support every secondary student receiving road-safety education in school?

And should preparing for the Driver Theory Test form part of it?
