It has come to our attention over the past few weeks that people have been entering the various daffodil fields in the Bandon area to pick flowers. The time has come where we would request the general public to stop entering the field, for flowers or for other purposes.
We understand that some have entered the field and made donations to the Irish Cancer Society in lieu of daffodil day. That is something that we condone and support. A link for the Irish Cancer Society donation page is available here: https://www.cancer.ie/ways-to-help/donate/donate
In recent times, people have overstepped the boundary, by taking more than is welcome. Taking the flower bulbs is stealing. We are very upset that people decided to take bulbs from the ground. It is an act of stealing. As a result of people stealing the bulbs, the fields are not open to the public, and anyone unauthorized persons in the field will be prosecuted. I am trying to run a business, and this has gone too far. The situation is no different from going into another field and taking another farmer’s barley, oat, or corn crop. The field is private property. It is not open to the public, the products are not free.
We must remind people that the daffodils and their bulbs are essential to our business. I rely on selling the flowers and the bulbs to run my business, to pay employees and so on. The bulbs are for sale in garden centres and shops around the country. If you would like bulbs, you are welcome to purchase them in the shop, but you are not welcome to take the bulbs from the fields. I rely on the bulbs to produce the crop, and if the bulbs are removed it will reduce my crop even more, which I do not need after a season that was cut short by COVID-19.
I know people appreciate the flowers and admire them, but they are also for sale in local shops such as Supervalu in Bandon and if all goes well Daffodil Day will happen next year. We have worked hard all year round in order for the crop to grow. To see people enter the field and take the bulbs without permission is disrespectful.
Stay safe and practice social distancing.
