December gets decided in September.
Other companies are already holding the venues worth having for the second week of December, and the acts worth booking went into somebody's diary weeks ago. So make the six decisions early, while you still have a choice.
Here is what shapes the night:
• Pick the date first. Everything else negotiates around it, so choose a first date and a second you would still be happy with, then build the venue, the food and the entertainment to fit.
• Decide who it is for. Staff only, partners invited, or families welcome. That one answer moves the numbers, the budget, the venue and the tone.
• Work in cost per head. A total budget is hard to spend well. A per-head figure makes every decision after it obvious.
• Choose the format. A seated dinner keeps people at their table with the same six faces all night. Standing, with food stations, keeps the room moving and mixing.
• Book the entertainment early. Bands, DJs, comperes and casino tables fill their December long before the venues do.
• Keep the speeches short. Say it early, say it once, and let them at the night.
And the one that never makes the list until it is too late: sort out how people are getting home. A great night can still end badly at a taxi rank in the cold.
