“Through this trade mission, it is our hope that Indonesian businesspeople will be able to boost the exports of many commodities, whether those that have been available in Japan before or not,” Trade Minister Enggartiasto Lukita said in a statement on Sunday.

Indonesia’s exports to Japan include coal, copper, nickel, shrimp, paper products, palm oil derivatives, furniture, coffee and tires.

In response to shrinking bilateral trade with Japan, the Trade Ministry plans to conduct a trade mission to the East Asian nation from Nov. 28 to Nov. 30.

Indonesian firm PT Intra Asia Indonesia has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with its counterpart in Vietnam, in connection with its plan to construct a coal port in the southern part of the country with US$1 billion.

"Indonesia is one of the world's largest producers and exporters of coal. Since 2005, when it overtook Australia, the country is the leading exporter in terms of thermal coal. A significant portion of its exported thermal coal consists of the medium-quality type (between 5100 and 6100 cal/gram) and the low-quality type (below 5100 cal/gram) for which large demand originates from China and India. According to information presented by Indonesia's Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Indonesian coal reserves are estimated to last around 83 years if the current rate of production is to be continued."
