Writers and Artists from Exeter City of Literature and Jakarta City of Literature are participating in an international collaboration, reflecting on one another’s work and the theme of climate change.

Three local writers from each city are commissioned to create new writing that examines the disproportionate impacts of climate change on the Global South and how to improve conversations around the intersection of climate change and equity.

During the creation process, writers from each city were able to meet digitally to discuss their writing and reflect on the climate crisis in their respective cities. Artists from Exeter and Jakarta then responded to each piece of writing, creating a rich cross-cultural dialogue and adding a visual dimension to the project.

Head to JILF x Jaktent to see the exhibition of these culminating artwork and writing.

We are facing a multitude of crises, from environmental degradation to food shortages. These challenges have prompted many to question the sustainability of our current lifestyle.

Is our approach to knowledge production, economic activity, social interaction, and environmental impact truly useful for the common good?

Cultural actors are turning to the past for answers, exploring ancient texts and traditional practices to uncover timeless wisdom. By reexamining these historical sources, we can identify potential solutions to contemporary problems.

Join us in this session to explore the role of ancestral culture, particularly Indonesian ancient texts, in addressing the problems we are facing today. Aditia Gunawan, Eddy Supangkat, and Triyanto Triwikromo will be speakers, and Esha Tegar Putra will be the moderator.

Raising awareness to care for and coexist with nature is increasingly important as we face worsening environmental crises. One of the things we can do to grow ecological awareness is by providing education and parenting patterns to foster children's love for their environment.

By doing so, we can create an understanding of environmental importance and inspire children to take concrete actions for themselves and their environment.

Join us in this session as we will discuss environmentally conscious parenting styles, the availability of children's books that focus on environmental topics, and the government's role in designing education to face the ecological crisis. Puty Puar, Clefiana, and Anindito Aditomo will be the speakers while Addissya Paramasasti will moderate the discussion.

Meet Patricia Wulandari, one of the curators of 2024 JILF x Jaktent. She is a reader, podcaster, author, and mom of four cats. In 2017 she and her husband founded the Podluck Podcast to spark conversations among creatives and raise awareness through audio-visual content. She believes that creatives, writers, artists, and initiators play a unique role in tackling issues that have emotionally or physically impacted a lot of people.

Alongside M. Aan Mansyur, Isna Marifa, John H. McGlynn, and Zen Hae, Patricia brings her creative energy to design a platform for literature that questions dominant socio-economic models and advocates for sustainable alternatives. By focusing on diverse voices, particularly those from marginalized or indigenous backgrounds, they provide perspectives on sustainability from people of various backgrounds: literary writers, activists, and journalists covering these issues.

A modern approach to sustainable agriculture, permaculture draws inspiration from traditional gardening practices. Guided by necessity and tradition, it prioritizes resourcefulness, less waste, and a deep relationship with the land. Permaculture is not a new way of living: it is a way of living that acknowledges the existence of all organisms and has meaningful connections towards each other through an integrated design.

In a condition where green spaces are restricted and dependence on industrial food systems is high, urban permaculture offers an alternative for people to live sustainably through locally produced food, reduced carbon footprints, and strengthened communities.

How do we integrate permaculture design into how we design and build our place to live? What are the challenges and benefits of applying permaculture principles to urban environments? Let's explore this matter in this session with Soraya Cassandra (Kebun Kumara), Gibran Tragali (Sendalu Permaculture), and moderator Patricia Wulandari

In the pursuit of ensuring national food security, the government has introduced various massive-scale programs in the form of food estates. Large land areas have been cleared and cultivated to become national food barns. However, these mega projects have created many conflicts, whether with local communities or mother nature.

On the other hand, several food activists have carried out a series of movements to raise public awareness about alternative food sources, reducing our dependence on the market and the state. One of the ways food activists campaign for alternative food security is by learning and re-approaching the ancient knowledge of Indonesia's ancestors.

In this session, we will learn more about the efforts in exploring traditional food knowledge to attain food security in the future. Join the discussion with speakers Britania Sari and Renata Puji Sumedia Hanggarawati, alongside moderator Sari Widiati.

Today's urban Indonesians have a high awareness of the importance of nutritional knowledge. Not only are they aware of the content of food and drinks, but they also understand how these sources of nutrition are obtained, processed, and have a significant social impact on the economic process.

In line with this awareness, more and more culinary products, culinary-related content, and food security movements are enriching people's knowledge about nutrition, both in modern and traditional cuisine.

In this session, we will explore the combination of traditional and modern food knowledge and practices that promote good nutrition for our bodies. We will learn more about how our culinary practitioners process traditional culinary types that are nutritious, to be presented as culinary products that can be used by today's society to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

In addition to sharing a similar historical background as post-colonial countries, Southeast Asian countries also share a distinctive culinary identity. Geographical factors, migration, and other social-cultural encounters that have occurred over the centuries have influenced the likeness of culinary flavors in this region. These resemblances are not just a matter of taste, but they also represent the values of the people of Southeast Asia.

In this session, we'll discuss the traces of culinary similarities across Southeast Asian societies, and how they can serve as a key asset for future cultural products, helping to strengthen ties between Southeast Asian countries. Join the discussion with speaker Fadly Rahman and moderator Astrid Enricka.
