The beautiful Taman Bhagawan gave us all the inspiration we needed when we started mood boards for an Awards Gala event for 500. The rich brick reds, the Ramayana stories carved into stone, the big trees and lawns. The clients requested marigolds with gold and everything came together on paper for a formal seated dinner.

Terracotta and white tablecloths with prada cloth runners, marigold and chrysanthemums balanced on golden dulang and with gold ornament accents by , linens by , created an incredible dining area.

The giant 3 headed serpent stood guard over the event from cocktails to an epic fireworks show. The serpent was handmade from hundreds of handfans for its scales, with incredible carved wooden faces- every tiny detail making guests gasp the closer they got. was the genius maker of this creature alongside (managed by .bali).

Finally, to the small details we loved. Lotus lamps lit up pathways and strings of marigold and Balinese leaf decor hung over entrances to make a perfect golden night that guests will remember for a long time.

When our clients asked us for a elegant concept for a welcome reception for 500 people, we dreamed of a beautiful introduction to Bali for attendees seeing this island for the first time ever. We knew that they would be inundated by Bali's beautiful colors during their stay, so we went back to the basics, to black and white, to a monochrome palette full of Bali's volcanic black sands, shadow puppets dancing in the light, and, of course, the poleng cloth.

The decor was all handmade specifically for the event by Bali's most talented young artisans and makers in many villages in Ubud. celebrating the maker culture of Bali is at the heart of all our event design. It took months and months.

We envisioned a candi bentar split gate in the center invoking the Lempuyang silhouette framing the volcano with wayang awan cloud lanterns. A photo backdrop of black and white lamak (inspired in part by Walter Spies' black and white drawings of motifs from 1935) with boma guardians overlooking the event. Live weaving of poleng cloth by one of Bali's oldest tenun studios on the original machines (carefully dissembled and reassembled for the event) with gifts of black and white tenun cloth by for attendees. Frames on each side of the stage featuring live shadows telling Balinese stories of the land and people during the event.

The day of the event came with heavy grey skies and rain showers to help set the atmosphere, but the guests got to know Bali for the first time under clear skies.
