RECIPE OF THE DAY. The way.

Ingredients:

4 lemons
1 1/2 cups sugar
1 1/2 cups water

Instructions:

1) Wash the lemons and cut off the ends.
2) Cut the lemons into thin slices, about 1/4 inch thick.
3) Place the lemon slices in a large pot and cover them with cold water. Bring the water to a boil and let the lemons boil for 5 minutes.
4) Drain the lemons and rinse them under cold water.
5) In the same pot, combine the sugar and water and bring the mixture to a boil, stirring until the sugar dissolves.
6) Add the lemon slices to the pot and reduce the heat to low.
7) Let the lemons simmer in the syrup for about 45-60 minutes, until the syrup thickens and the lemon slices become translucent.
8) Remove the pot from the heat and let the spoon sweet cool to room temperature.
9) Transfer the lemon slices and syrup to a sterilized jar and store in the refrigerator.

Enjoy your Cretan Candied Lemon "Spoon Sweet" as a sweet and tangy treat on its own, or spooned over Greek yogurt or ice cream!

DISCOVER THE SOUL OF CRETE W/ Stelios Petrakis Trio + Dancer

In Cretan Art Music & Gastronomy you will have the chance to enjoy the new album of the quartet of the musician and composer Stelios Petrakis (middle), entitled "Spondi".

Original creations and Cretan traditional pieces given with the special perspective of the internationally recognized soloist, compose a special musical material, which is presented through an elegant edition in the form of a small book with an audio cd, with texts in three languages (EN FR GR).

Stelios Petrakis's colleagues are three great artists, the young skilled Cretan musicians, Dimitris Sideris (right) and Michalis Kontaxakis (left) and the dancer Charalambos Kakepakis, as the sound from his dancing steps is part of the album material.

THE INSTRUMENTS.

1) The Cretan lyra (middle photo) it is a Greek pear-shaped, three-stringed bowed musical instrument, central to the traditional music of Crete. The Cretan lyra is considered to be the most popular surviving form of the medieval Byzantine lyra, an ancestor of most European bowed instruments.

2) The Cretan laouto (right photo) is a long-neck fretted instrument of the lute family. In appearance it’s similar to the oud. It has four double metal strings and is played with a long plectrum that it used to be a feather of large birds (eagles etc).

3) The “Cretan” mandolin is a small stringed instrument with a long neck and pear-shaped body, similar in appearance to a bouzouki. It has four pairs of metal strings, and is typically played with a plectrum. The sound of the Cretan mandolin is bright and lively, and is often used in traditional Cretan music to provide melody and rhythm.
