10 reasons to attend the Probiotic and Prebiotic conference IPC

Probiotics are nonpathogenic live microorganism that can provide a diverse health benefits on the host. Prebiotics is a non-digestible fibre compounds that induce the growth or activity of microorganisms. Taking probiotics plus prebiotics could bring diverse types of health benefits. Probiotics are consumed in diverse ways including

dairy product, food supplements and functional foods with specific health claims. Recently, many reports suggest that certain probiotic strains or multi strain mixture have potent immunomodulatory activity in diverse disorders including allergic asthma, atopic dermatitis and rheumatoid arthritis. However some of the probiotic strains have an adverse effect on people with underlying health problems or immuno-compromised individuals. In addition, however, efficacy of probiotic administration is quite different depending on the type of strains and the amounts of doses and underlying mechanism of action is still unclear. By attending the International Scientific Conference on Probiotics and Prebiotics Gut Microbiota and Health (IPC), you will have a chance to expand your ideas on recent advances made in the science of probiotics, highlighting their current and future roles in maintaining health and preventing diseases. The next IPC will be held during 27 - 30 June 2022 in Bratislava, Slovakia. The main scientific issue of IPC2022 are following:
(1) Prebiotics- How does it work and How to develop a novel prebiotics? (2) Human milk oligosaccharides as a prebiotics and immune modulator
(3) How to get an approval for probiotics with health claims? Approaches to get approval from EFSA and other countries,
(4) How to identify functional probiotics? Development of novel screening system and evaluation procedure to identify functional probiotics,
(5), How probiotics work? Elucidation of underlying mechanism of actions,
(6) What are the effector molecules mediate health benefits of probiotics? How to identify and how to evaluate the functionality? (7) How to characterize probiotic strains? Genetics, functional genomics of probiotic strains
(8) How to formulate the probiotics to keep maximum effectiveness? (9) Clinical trial of probiotics; What are the current statues of health benefit of probiotics in diverse disorders? (10) Future probiotics? Novel function of probiotics? By attending the IPC2022, you will meet the top class scientists who influenced the past, influence the present, and most importantly emerging young scientists, future of probiotics. 🔬🧫🧬 IBS is a chronic functional gastrointestinal disorder characterized by abdominal pain, bloating and abnormalities in stool frequency or form.

👩‍⚕️ The gut microbiota of people living with IBS differs markedly to the microbiota of healthy individuals.

🧬 Gut microbiota may play a key role in IBS aetiology and IBS symptoms may be alleviated by modulating the gut microbiota.

👨‍🔬 Several proposed ways to modulate gut health include normalizing the gut microbiota, preventing the overgrowth of pathogenic bacteria, modulating visceral afferent pathways, and enhancing intestinal barrier function.

🧫 However, significant heterogeneity between studies, study quality and population, study design and concerns about sample size have limited national and supranational bodies from recommending probiotics for IBS. Further well-powered, randomized, repeatable and controlled trials are warranted.

🔬🧫🧬 Pelvic radiation disease (PRD) is a serious complication resulting from radiotherapy for pelvic cancer.

👩‍⚕️ This condition leads to digestive toxicities that can significantly diminish the quality of life for affected patients.

🧬 Unfortunately, effective curative treatment strategies are currently lacking.

👨‍🔬 At the Nuclear safety and radiation protection authority (ASNR) and in collaboration with INRAe’s teams (MICALIS and MGP), we aim to investigate the role of gut microbiota in the development and progression of PRD.

🧫 Our goal is to identify potential therapeutic strategies using prebiotics, probiotics, or postbiotics.

🔬🧫🧬 Aging is associated with significant alterations in gut microbiota composition and immune function, leading to a chronic low-grade systemic inflammation known as inflammaging.

👩‍⚕️ This state contributes to various age-related conditions, including gastrointestinal disturbances, anaemia, and declining nutritional and functional status.

🧬 Gut dysbiosis plays a key role in these processes, and interventions targeting the microbiota, such as postbiotics—non-viable bacterial products or metabolic by-products that confer health benefits—are gaining attention as promising therapeutic strategies.

👨‍🔬 The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of a postbiotic formulation containing Lacticaseibacillus paracasei CECT9610 and Lactiplantibacillus plantarum CECT9608 on bowel function, systemic inflammation, haematological parameters, and microbiota composition in institutionalized older adults.

🧫 A randomized, controlled, double-blind clinical trial was conducted in 50 institutionalized individuals over the age of 65 at the Centro Residencial El Cuartillo.

🔬🧫🧬 Metabolic dysfunction–associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) affects about 20-40% of the adult population in high-income countries. It is now a leading indication for liver transplantation and can lead to cirrhosis or hepatocellular carcinoma.

👩‍⚕️ First, Metagenome-Wide Association Study (MWAS) was applied to identify gut bacterial species negatively associated with liver diseases. Then, cell culture experiments were performed to evaluate anti-inflammatory properties of the identified bacterial species. Finally, the bacterial species was administrated to mice colonized with a gut microbiota from a patient with liver disease to assess its protective capacities.

🧬 Through analyses of the gut microbiota with shotgun metagenomics of f***l samples from two cohorts of patients with liver diseases, we first observed that compared to healthy controls, Adlercreutzia equolifaciens is depleted in patients.

👨‍🔬 We further showed that its abundance decreases as the disease progresses and eventually disappears in the last stages indicating a strong association with disease severity...

🧫 If several gut bacterial species have been implicated in liver diseases development, the species which could protect from these pathologies are largely unknown. Based on these results, we propose that counterbalancing dysbiosis using A. equolifaciens as a live biotherapeutic product may be a promising strategy for the prevention and/or treatment of liver diseases.

🔬🧫🧬 Many consumers nowadays demand plant-based milk analogues for reasons related to lifestyle, health, diet and sustainability. This has led to the increasing development of new vegetable products, fermented or not.

👩‍⚕️ In the meantime, industrialised countries experience a growing incidence of non-communicable diseases associated with chronic inflammation. There is thus a growing need for functional foods targeting gut microbiota, homeostasis and health.

🧬 We screened a collection of 104 strains, from nine lactic acid bacteria species and two propionic acid bacteria species, based on their ability to ferment plant or milk carbohydrates, to acidify goat milk, soy milk analogue and h**p milk analogue, as well as to hydrolyse proteins isolated from these three products.

👨‍🔬 Following immunological and biochemical screening of both probiotic and fermentation starter abilities, we selected five strains: Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. lactis Bioprox1585, Lactobacillus acidophilus Bioprox6307, Lactococcus lactis Bioprox7116, Streptococcus thermophilus CIRM-BIA251, and Acidipropionibacterium acidipropionici CIRM-BIA2003.

🧫 This work reinforces the potent beneficial role of fermented products, provided that the ferment strains possess probiotic properties. Such innovative fermented vegetable products thus open perspectives as functional foods targeting gut inflammation, in a context of growing incidence of inflammatory ailments related to the gut microbiota, worldwide.

🔬🧫🧬 Polyphenols are known for their beneficial effects on cellular metabolism, through modulation of mitochondrial function.

👩‍⚕️ Hesperitin and naringenin are two citrus derived polyphenols with promising effects for metabolic health.

🧬 These bioactive compounds have been shown to increase mitochondrial respiration, enhance antioxidant defences and have been found to regulate energy metabolism in various cell types, predominantly in muscle or hepatic cells.

👨‍🔬 However, hesperetin and naringenin are primarily absorbed and metabolized in the intestinal epithelium. Intestinal epithelial cells exhibit high metabolic activity and are dependent on mitochondrial ATP production to maintain functions such as epithelial barrier integrity and nutrient absorption.

🧫 Therefore, it is important to investigate the potential effects of these polyphenols in this specific cell type. To this end, this study investigated the influence of hesperetin and naringenin on mitochondrial respiration and glycolysis in differentiated Caco-2 cells using the Seahorse XF platform.

🔬🧫🧬 Overweight and obesity—defined by excessive fat accumulation, a body mass index (BMI) of 25.0–29.9 and ≥30, respectively, or fat mass above 25% can significantly increase the risk of metabolic disorders such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and certain cancers.

👩‍⚕️ Addressing and maintaining a healthy weight remains challenging due to the complex and multifactorial nature of weight gain, requiring personalised and multi-pronged management strategies.

🧬 This study investigates the acute effects of a single 3g dose of a chromium (III) enriched glucomannan-FOS complex on glycaemic and insulin responses during an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT).

👨‍🔬 The primary outcome is the impact on postprandial glucose and insulin levels. Secondary outcomes include impact on subjective appetite-related sensations such as fullness, hunger, and desire to eat.

🧫 Co-ingestion of SB with dextrose resulted in improved glycaemic control and to statistically significantly lower sensations of hunger and increases in fullness, suggesting its potential role in appetite regulation to assist weight management.
