💠 *Tow* and *Toe*
In the wake of ubiquitous discussions of *tow tax* and the dissenting views surrounding it, let's take the opportunity to learn its spelling and meaning, to be able to distinguish it from other _homophones_ (words pronounced the same way).

*Tow* is pronounced the same way as *toe* but they have different meanings.

*Tow* can be used as a noun, and as a verb. As a verb, *tow* means to pull a car or boat behind another vehicle using a rope or chain. The other verb forms are *towed* and *towing*. As a noun, it refers to the act of one vehicle pulling another vehicle using a rope or chain.

The word *toe*, on the other hand, refers to one of the five small parts that stick out from the foot. It is a singular noun. The plural form is *toes*. *Toe* can also be used as a verb. *Toes* is used in idioms such as _keep somebody on their toes_ which means "to make sure that somebody is ready to deal with anything that might happen by doing things they are not expecting", and _toe the line_ which means to say or do what somebody in authority tells you to say or do, even if you do not share the same opinion.

Example
1. My smallest *toe* hurts. ✅
2. Our car was *towed* away by the police. ✅
3. The interest of the nation should drive our discussions in this *tow* tax saga. ✅

❇ *Misused words/expressions*❌
💠 *The last but not least*
The standard idiom is *last but not least*. There is no article *the*. This idiom doesn't mean _last but one_. It means ''importantly, despite being mentioned after everyone else'', or used to say that a final statement is not less important than previous statements.

Example
1. I would like to thank my parents, my siblings, and, *last but not least*, my wife.✅

❇ *Grammar*📚
💠 *Punctuations*
*Punctuation* refers to the marks used in writing that divide sentences and phrases; the system of using these marks. Examples of these marks are question mark (?), full stop/period (.), comma (,), etc.

The noun *punctuation* is an uncountable noun. It exists only in its singular form so it is inappropriate to write *punctuations*.

Example
1. We learnt *punctuations* today. ❌
We learnt *punctuation* today. ✅

❇ *Pronunciation*◀🅿▶
💠 *Martyr* _BrE_ /'mɑ:tə(r)/ _NAmE_ /mɑ:r'tə(r)/
A person who suffers very much or is killed because of his/her religious or political beliefs is a *martyr*. It can be used as a noun and a verb.

*Martyr* is pronounced in British English as /mɑɑ tə(r)/ but pronounced in American English as /mɑɑr tə(r)/. It is not pronounced as /ma ta ya/.

Example
1. Marlowe was a *martyr* to the cause of freedom. ✅

❇ *Spell Check*☑
💠 *Hose*
It is a long tube made of rubber, plastic, etc, used for putting water onto fires, gardens, etc. It is different from *holes* (openings) and *hoes* (a garden tool for breaking up soil and removing weeds, etc.)

Example
1. The garden *hose* she is using has been leaking continuously. ✅

❇ *Ghanaianism/Ghanaian English😜🙊🙈*
💠 *Skin guide*
The piece of thick material that is used to protect the lower front part of the leg when playing sports is called a *shin guard* or *shin pad*, not *skin guide*. The *shin* refers to the front part of the leg below the knee.

Example
1. But for the *shin guard* Lionel Messi was wearing, he would have been seriously injured by Sergio Ramos. ✅

❇ *Idiom of the day*🆔
💠 *An armchair critic*
It refers to a person who knows about a subject only by reading or hearing about it and criticises without active experience or firsthand knowledge.

Example
1. His analysis on issues shows that he is only *an armchair critic*. ✅

❇ *Word of the day*👍🏽🆕
💠 *Out-of-pocket (expenses/costs)*
*Out-of-pocket* is an adjective. When used with *expenses/costs/expenditure*, it refers to small business expenses that you pay yourself, with your employer paying you back later. This is not to be tried with all employers.😂😜😂😂😹🤣.

Example
1. The *out-of-pocket expenses* on our last trip have not been paid yet. ✅ (I told you so! 😜)

❇ *Conversation Tip*✅
💠 *Sense of humour*
It refers to a person's ability to perceive humour or appreciate a joke. Does everyone have a sense of humour? Why is it important to have a sense of humour?

It refers to the main character of a story who does not have the qualities of a typical hero, and is either more like an ordinary person or morally bad; one who lacks conventional heroic attributes.
