Our Sustainable Growing Practices in our Acomb Plot:
1) Working with the Seasons
We grow flowers that are in tune with the seasons and suited to the Yorkshire climate. By embracing the weather and working with the elements, rather than against them, we grow resilient, naturally beautiful blooms.
2) Coffee Grounds from the Community
When we deliver our flower buckets to cafe, we collect used coffee grounds in return. These are added to our compost or spread directly onto the soil to help deter slugs and enrich the earth, a small act of circular sustainability.
3) Harvesting Rainwater
We’ve placed three water butts around the garden to collect rainwater. This precious resource is used in our greenhouse and to water the flowers in our raised beds, helping us reduce reliance on mains water.
4) Natural Soil Enrichment
We use alpaca manure, from a local Alpaca farm, as a natural soil conditioner. It’s rich in nutrients and works gently to feed both the soil and our flowers, helping them grow strong and healthy without the need for synthetic fertilisers.
5) Composting Mindfully
All our garden and green waste goes into a hot compost bin to break down quickly. Once partially composted, we transfer it to a traditional compost bin to continue the process. We also add flower cuttings and spent blooms from the workshop. Anything that can’t be composted on site is responsibly disposed of via the council’s green waste collection.
