Bedern Hall is the historic 14th century dining hall of the Vicars Choral of York Minster. We also operate as an events venue in the centre of York that can host a variety of events including wedding ceremonies and receptions and family celebrations. We are open regularly to visitors and residents alike and our courtyard cafe provides a retreat from the busy nearby streets. Bedern Hall Company ope

rates as a Non-Profit; so when you hold an event with us the charges you pay go straight back into the preservation of the Hall. So not only can you enjoy your day with us, but you will also be helping to allow others to do so in the future. Our small but professional team, led by Hall Manager Elly Richmond, will take care of arrangements; this is our business and it’s important to us that your event is a success. Bedern Hall is pleased to support a number of local heritage, cultural, charitable and voluntary sector organisations. By providing such groups with affordable meeting space and helping them organise events we help our City to grow. These groups include Shopmobility York, York Design Awards, York Festival Trust (York Mystery Plays), York Shakespeare Project, Association of Voluntary Guides.

Did you know?

🏛️ Bedern Hall is home to the York Butchers' Gild.
The Gild was founded in 1272 and claims continuous membership since its formation.

👥What did the Gild do?

In the past, the Butchers, in common with the other Gilds, played a key role in the governance of the City, in the maintenance of trade standards and in the training of apprentices. Charitable and religious occasions were, and are, important.

👉Gild membership gradually fell throughout the 18th and 19th centuries until there was just one member left in 1940. However, since then, new members have been sworn in thus the Gild can claim continuous membership since its medieval roots.

Did you know?

🏛️ Bedern Hall is home to the Gild of Freemen of the City of York. The Gild was founded in 1953 for the benefit of Freemen and to uphold the vows of Freedom.

👥What is a Freeman?
In medieval England, a 'Freeman' was someone who was not the property of a feudal lord. In York, as in many other cities, a man had to become a Freeman before he was allowed to trade or become a master craftsman. He also became a member of his trade guild.

👉Today, the Gild promotes the good reputation of the City, acts as guardian in protecting and developing the traditional rights of Freemen, preserves the custom of caring for the welfare of Gild Freemen, operates a benevolent fund, subscribes to charitable causes and provides a range of social activities.
