Pyramus and Thisbe Productions - TWICE NIGHTLY
Fri 26 - Sat 27 June, 7.30pm!

A celebration of the glory days of Variety with Dominic Goodwin

Freddie Francis has been a second spot comic for thirty years touring the country on every variety bill going. We find him in 1956 recalling his life spent touring the halls; the ups, the downs, the riotous, the fantastic and the downright silly! He recalls his days entertaining the troops during the war, playing at the infamous Glasgow Empire, and we discover what really happened when a speciality act lost her snake on stage!!

Ultimately Twice Nightly is a fading memory of the variety stage. The death of something that has been part of everyone’s life for decades is now on the decline. Where will Freddie go whenhe finishes this tour? Who will he go back to, and ultimately who really cares? Twice Nightly also includes routines from amongst others: Max Miller, Rob Wilton, Jimmy James and Norman Evans and renditions of many of the popular songs of the time, such as The Man who broke the bank at Monte Carlo, Happy days are here again and Goodnight Sweetheart.

Dominic Goodwin, the onetime manager of Helmsley Arts Centre returns with his first one man comedy show. “Twice Nightly”, written and performed by Dominic and directed by York director Thomas Frere comes to the venue on Friday 26 and Saturday 27 June, nightly at 7.30pm.

The shows follows the story of a struggling comedian in 1956, just towards the end of variety. Many acts of the time are highlighted, including Norman “over the garden wall” Evans (said to be an influence on Les Dawson) Stockton comic Jimmy James, Wartime star Rob Wilton and the iconic Max Miller.

We opened last Thursday at The Ropewalk at Barton upon Humber, a fabaroonie night! Lots of laughter and the audience were with me all the way! I just managed to shake them off at Crewe!! Twice Nightly is off and running! Some lovely comments: “Your show is a tonic!” “There are more laughs in your show than any other show I’ve seen recently!” “Echoes of your show keeps resonating with me, it was superb!” A good start to the tour.

Well Twice Nightly is nearly there! We’ve just had a fabulous week at The lovely Swallow Theatre getting the show up and on its feet with the dear man that is Thomas Frere the photos (in the comments) give a flavour of it all. The final pic is the beautiful Clatteringshaws Loch which I passed on my way home for a moment of quiet reflection.
Huge thank you to everyone who has donated to the cause. I have hit 2 and a half stone off, although that is part of a much bigger journey. Some of the folk who have put money in I know could ill afford it, which makes it all the more special. To be honest I have cried a few tears over people’s kindness as it means the world and I hope to see you all on the tour.
I attach the link here, just in case anyone who hasn’t - fancies chucking in! It’ll be the last time I bombard you.

Mornin all, well the weight continues to drop! I’m now 2 stone 4lbs down with just 3lbs to go before my first mini target! I’m tickled pink! No longer a bottle of wine every day (honest!) but the occasional gin and slim!
Arrangements for the tour of Twice Nightly are coming on a-pace! Props, set and cozzies are ready (isn’t Vinted a boon!). And lines are bedding down in my head.
A huge thank you to everyone who has put in so far, I can’t tell you the difference it has made to my stress levels! You’re all marvels!

The weight loss is progressing well, I’m next weighed on Monday! In the meantime a huge thank you to everyone who has helped out so far! To have had support like this is fantastic. I’ve been talking to Ronnie Taylor’s two daughters who have given me permission to perform his “Over the garden wall” sketch made famous by the great Norman Evans. More updates to follow…
