At The Mill

Hello Friends.

It’s been a while since we’ve posted here. How you going?

Now, a little while ago we promised we’d keep finding ways to bring good stuff to our village. And here’s one:
SELENE - 19th September - Stillington Village Hall.

SELENE is a theatre show by Wright & Grainger, made with and performed by our very own Megan Drury
It premiered on the other side of the world at the beginning of this year. It’s toured across Australia, New Zealand and the UK. It’s won awards and gained amazing reviews. It’s sold out theatres, festival tents and pop up venues. And now we’re bringing it to our own brilliant village hall, so we wanted to let you know about it.
It’s a show about the goddess and the dark side of the moon. It’s a show about the things we grow up in the orbit of. And it’s a show about the stuff inside us, all the wild stuff inside us.
And it’s set in this landscape - in these rolling fields and hill of rural North Yorkshire.

It starts at 7.30pm, it’s 70mins long. We’re going to do cocktails, and maybe we’ll head to the pub after.

All tix are via Wright & Grainger’s website.

We can’t wait. Hopefully see you there, you beauties. And you never know, if this goes well, maybe we’ll find a way to keep doing it.

Loads of love from all of us here At The Mill.

Xx

Dear Mill Community,

As a family, we started Summer At The Mill as a ‘pop-up venue’ in our home village of Stillington during the pandemic. What began as a small initiative has grown over the past three years and we have taken great delight in providing an array of different events… music, comedy and theatre, foodie evenings and our Saturday café!

We wish to let you know that we’re now going to press pause. We’d like to explain why, and we’d also like to say a huge THANK YOU.

In order to carry on as a permanent food and entertainment venue, it is required of us to gain planning permission - to change the site from residential to business. We were granted a premises license in our first year, then started the full planning permission process 18 months ago, and we’ve been working with a consultant to help us navigate the best options. The process is lengthy and costly. It is all sensible stuff, and we have no objections at all to what is required. However, all of the surveys and infrastructure we’d need to implement amounts to thousands of pounds. So, as a family, we just need to have a careful think about the levels of investment we can realistically make at this stage.

For 2024 we will not be opening our Saturday Café, or programming evening theatre, music and foodie events. With this comes an amount of sadness, as we know how many people love spending time At The Mill. But we also carry a huge amount of pride and happiness with us. The Mill truly is our happy place. We have built the most wonderful team and we feel so incredibly grateful for everything that we have collectively achieved during the last three years.

The Mill continues to be a family home and an accommodation site. As a group of people, The Mill family and friends will continue to think up ways to create magic within our wonderful village and wider cultural community. Whilst we take stock, we’d like to say the biggest THANK YOU to all who’ve visited, all who’ve been involved, all who’ve supported and encouraged.

All Our Love,

Team Mill

XO

Dearest Mill Friends!

Just one month ago, we wrapped up our third-ever Summer At The Mill - an annual season of stellar entertainment, delicious food, and gorgeous reasons to come together. From our beautiful Saturday Café, to brilliant family and children's entertainment, to hilarious comedy, to moving theatre, to stunning music, to scrumptious supper clubs, to love-filled weddings, to special private events, we gathered in our Gardens across the Summer months in a series of fun, interesting, vibrant, vital, playful, and meaningful ways.

Thank you for visiting to soak up the arts and eat up the feasts. Thank you for following along on emails and on our website and here social media. Thank you for engaging, for showing interest and support, for turning up in all the ways you did to be a fabulous part of Summer At The Mill 2023. We absolutely adore our growing community At The Mill.

A huge thank you to all the artists, entertainers, and chefs who served up creative and culinary treats. Thank you to our local suppliers, whose produce and products graced our Café and Bar. And special thanks to our staff At The Mill; the lovely team who are now like an extended family to our core family! Incredible people who consistently brought their good vibes and hard work to everything we brought to you! Much love!

There'll be more news soon enough, but for now we simply wanted to say cheers and thank you for a bright and beautiful Summer 2023, and all the best to you as we waltz our way into Autumn and Winter!

Warmest wishes,

Maggi & Paul, Abbi & Pauly, Alex & Megan

BISCUIT OF DESTINY
By John Hegley

Friday 15 September 7:30pm
Theatre At The Mill

John Hegley, the star of radio, T.V. and school assemblies, is ready once more to take to road and rail with a clutch of new verses, a few older favourites, and a cardboard camel with a moving jaw.

The biscuits in the show derive from a phrase used by Romantic Poet, John Keats: 'a scarcity of buiscuit' - not the sort of phrase nor spelling you expect from a romantic poet. The show delves into the more eccentric side of Keats, alongside everyday goings-on in the Hegley homes of now and yesteryear. It includes 7 drawings of elephants, myths, discos, daleks, optional community singing and the search for a sense of self-worth. Designed more for adults, but suitable for the odd nine-year-old.

The show won a 'Lustrum Award' at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2022, even though there were no biscuits.

ALLIGATOR GUMBO

Friday 8 September 7:30pm
Music At The Mill

Alligator Gumbo are an exciting 7-piece band playing jazz from the hey-day of the New Orleans swing/jazz era, in particular the "roaring 20s", when music was raw and largely improvised with melodies and solos happening simultaneously which has now become defined as the 'New Orleans' sound.

Performing extensively for over 10 years, Alligator Gumbo have made numerous appearances at prestigious international jazz festivals and clubs throughout the country, establishing themselves as firm favourites on the British jazz scene. The band continues to wow audiences far and wide with their good-natured mix of foot-stomping rhythms and toe-tapping tunes, and raucous singalongs! Guaranteed to be a show like no other and not to be missed!

Our Bar At The Mill will be up and running, alongside our wood-fired pizza oven, to accompany this event! Please feel free to arrive any time from 6:30pm, for drinks and pizzas!
