Your marquee wedding may begin with the idea of hosting your wedding in the garden of your childhood home, the perfect backdrop for a very personal celebration. But creating it involves rather more than choosing the style of marquee🤍

And there are plenty of styles to choose from. These are three very different celebrations, each with a different marquee style and each creating a very different setting.

Before the florals are created, table decor carefully positioned and candles lit, there are numerous decisions to make about power, catering infrastructure, lighting, access, layout, guest flow and, of course, the rather unpredictable British weather.
None of it is particularly romantic, nor is it likely to be noticed by your guests, but these are the decisions that allow everything else to come together seamlessly.

For me as a wedding planner, that is one of the things that makes planning a marquee wedding so different from choosing an established wedding venue. You aren't simply styling a space. You are creating the venue itself.

Perhaps it’s my love of logistics that makes marquee wedding planning something I enjoy so much. There’s something very satisfying about looking beyond how everything will eventually look and working out exactly how it will all come together to create the wedding you envisage.

30 years ago today, I was the bride 🤍 It was also my birthday, because after a rather unexpected, if not particularly romantic, proposal we decided we didn't want to wait another year to marry. I'd already waited 8 years!

My birthday fell on a Saturday, the church was available and we thought, why not? At least Mr B would never forget our anniversary!

Five months later, we married in our village church followed by a marquee reception in the garden of my childhood home, exactly where I'd always wanted my wedding. My stepfather worked tirelessly getting the garden ready and my mum, an exceptional outside caterer, took care of the food (and much more too!)🤍

Was I a traditional bride? Absolutely.

Something old, something new. My bridesmaids wore green because it was, and still is, my favourite colour. We had a three-tiered fruit wedding cake, although I rebelled slightly with a hexagonal one! Traditional speeches, a first dance and everyone waving us off at the end of the night.

My stepfather gave a reading, my dad got everyone to sing Happy Birthday during the speeches and Mr B toasted us with a glass of milk because he doesn't like ch*****ne!

Very us. And very 1996. Would I change anything today? Absolutely not.

Styles change and wedding trends come and go. There are things we chose that probably wouldn't appear on many 2026 Pinterest boards, although Pinterest and social media didn't even exist then!

But my bridesmaids didn't wear green because it was the colour of the year. They wore it because I loved green especially emerald.

And we didn't marry at home because marquee weddings were fashionable. We did because it was where I grew up and where I'd always imagined getting married. In fact, my parents weren't allowed to move until I'd had my wedding there!

30 years later, I remember holding my dad's hand very tightly in the car. Saying our vows. The laughter, speeches, dancing and having everyone we cared about together.

Most of all, I remember how it felt for both of us. And perhaps that's really the point.

It isn't whether our wedding was fashionable that matters. It's that it was ours.
