Coming to Theatre Royal on 2nd November!

Four actors meet up to do Dickens the way Dickens himself would have done Dickens: turning up to a venue and reading out his longwinded books for hours on end. Realising that this may not be the best way of entertaining an audience, they decide to create their own show focussing on Dicken’s lesser-known characters such as Silage Honeygams, Mr. McCorblimey, and Rumpus Fuzzywig!

David Spicer’s mad Dickensian mash-up will have you rolling in the aisles and the Dickens turning in his grave and leave the audience, like Oliver Twist, asking for more!

Steven Arnold, best known as for his fifteen-year stint on Coronation Street as Ashley Peacock, will join the cast of four actors in David Spicer’s farcical fusion of Dicken’s classics.

The Northern Comedy Theatre originally produced the Doing series of zoom-based online performances at the start of the March 2020 lockdown, with titles such as Doing Whodunnit and Doing Shakespeare, earning them six OnComms awards and a special ONEOFF award from Off West End. Many of these shows and more have now been adapted for live performance

The Stranger is all done. The curtain is down and the set is already struck.
We had lots of wonderful comments and reviews and it was lovely to be able to pass them on to the cast and crew.
A little rest is much needed now, before we start work in our next show.

Meet the Cast!

Two days to go, and we’re getting into the nitty gritty! Meet Matthew Poynton who plays our titular character Mr Strange, the Stranger. Matt has appeared in many many shows with Workington Playgoers, and each role brings something different. Will Mr Strange be more of the same? You’ll have to come and watch to find out why Agatha Christie felt we needed to know The Stranger’s story…

Meet the Cast!

With three days to go, please meet our second gossipy housekeeper: Mrs Birch, played by Ruth Hellen!

Ruth has appeared in a series of shows with Playgoers, each as different as the last, and ‘The Stranger’ will be different still! You’ll have seen her talents in Tommy’s Story; Beauty Queen of Leanane; Di and Viv and Rose; The River: Green Forms: Four Weddings and an Elvis and most recently Blithe Spirit, and now she’s lighting up the stage as delightful Mrs Birch.

What role does she play in the story? You’ll have to come and watch to find out!!

Meet the Cast!

Four days to go, and if we don’t get blown away by Storm Amy we’d like to introduce you to a new member of Workington Playgoers: Uther Teasdale!

Uther has just graduated from university and is enjoying being in the stage in a local amateur production, in which he appears as Dick Lane, fiancé of Enid. He is a sensible gentleman who Enid is growing increasingly bored of… want to know more?
