A good host isn't loud; a good host is adaptable
I received a lovely five-star review this morning from Abbey and Matt, whose wedding I had the absolute pleasure of hosting on New Year’s Eve at the Royal Berkshire Hotel in Ascot.
There was one line in particular that really stuck with me: “He worked quietly in the background throughout the whole day, absolutely blowing people's minds!”
That’s not a sentence you often hear about a wedding host. Normally, when I host a wedding, I’m very visible. Big announcements, big moments, huge rounds of applause for entrances, and plenty of energy to create those brilliant napkin-waving shots for the photographers and videographers.
But Abbey and Matt didn’t want that. They wanted the day to feel effortless. Smooth. Relaxed. No one left out. Guests mixing naturally. Everything happening exactly when it should, without it ever feeling like they were being “managed”. And honestly, that’s the real skill of hosting.
Being able to bring the energy when it’s needed, and step back when it isn’t.
So yes, it’s a slightly understated review… but I couldn’t be happier with it.
