Playtime, Jaques Tati (1967)

Playtime is filmed on a huge, complex set suggestive of the cool, vaguely dehumanising effects of technology and design on modern life. Jacques Tati’s masterpiece offers a low-key account of the bumbling Hulot’s experiences during one day in Paris.

An office block of glass and steel becomes a boxed-in prison; a chaotic restaurant provides a memorably liberating opportunity for humanity to express itself.

This film is a comic work of art and Tati at his best.

Our first of four Outdoor Summer Theatre performances begins with Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen, brought to life by Moving Parts Theatre Company.

Following the success of last summer’s Vanity Fair, this brand-new adaptation of Austen’s most theatrical novel follows Catherine Morland — a lover of “horrid” fiction who dreams of dark secrets, ancient mysteries and becoming a true heroine…
