🌸Tips & Tricks from the flower field 🌸

It feels wrong… but it works.

🌱Pinching out is one of those jobs that can feel brutal, but it’s one of the best ways to get stronger plants and more flowers.

Our baby Antirrinhums sown earlier this Spring really benefit from being pinched. But beware not all flowers benefit so do check before you get too carried away!

When pinching out, we remove the main growing tip just above a healthy set of leaves. The leaf joints are where the new side shoots will form, giving you branching stems instead of one tall stem.

More branches = more flowers.

And don’t throw those tips away — you can root them as cuttings. It’s something I’d definitely consider if I’d had poor germination of a particular colour and wanted a few more plants.

And when you’ve got rows and rows to do? You learn not to overthink it.

A quick pinch, move on, repeat.

I’ve even heard of people doing it with a hedge trimmer (not sure I’m quite there yet).

Happy Pinching.

🌱Apparently this is my ā€˜don’t disturb me I’m sowing seeds’ face 🤣 Fully focused but although I might not look it, this is actually my happy place to be🌱

Podcast on — and a quiet morning of sowing annual asters, helichrysum, Limonium, antirrhinums and zinnias.

A few little 🌸tips&tricks🌸 to help you with your cut flower sowing:

– I never sow a-lot of any variety in one go. Sowing varieties approximately every 3 weeks keeps that steady flow of flowers through the summer.

– A light sprinkle of vermiculite over the top — especially with the peat-free compost I am using at the moment. It has been forming a dry crust on top making it very difficult for tiny seeds to push through. The vermiculite helps hold moisture where it’s needed and gives the seeds an easier start to life.

Happy sowing

Back in October, Simeon joined us at the flower farm to film a morning of autumn work out in the field. We were still cutting flowers then, even as the days grew shorter. But this past week the first hard frost arrived, the field has finished for the year, and it suddenly feels as though winter has settled in.

These scenes, captured not so long ago, already feel like a memory — and it always amazes me how quickly autumn can slip away.

It may be a while before the Lower Norton Flower Farm team can enjoy a coffee break out in the field again, but when that first hint of spring arrives in 2026, you can be sure we’ll be out there, soaking up the promise of the year ahead with coffee in hand.

Back in October we had the pleasure of welcoming Simeon to Lower Norton Flower Farm. He spent the morning with us, along with the lovely Monica who directed the shoot. Together, they captured some truly beautiful moments of life here at Lower Norton Flower Farm.

This first clip is a little introduction from me to the farm. I hope you enjoy!
