There is a reason why this is one of my all time favourite images, and why it’s the first one you see on my website.
It’s a true documentary moment - no input from me as I shot from a distance, it’s clearly a first dance, and the movement is dynamic.
But also by shooting wider from afar, I deliberately wanted to include the wider landscape, the twilight sky, and the cliffs in shadow to give a real sense of place.
Then I had to make sure that the couple were perfectly lit and the focus of the frame, with a little light on the crowd, whilst balancing the exposure to keep the dramatic sky, all while still keeping it as a documentary image, waiting for that decisive moment.
It’s this incorporation of a sense of place, a portrait of Lucy and Steve, and a pure documentary moment that ties my style of photography together harmoniously, and one of the reasons this image stands out for me.
