Shick-Shack Day in Hampshire is the traditional name for Oak Apple Day, which is celebrated annually on 29th May to mark King Charles II's birthday and his restoration to the the throne (after hiding in an oak tree during the Civil War). This old celebration is still enacted in parts of Hampshire and it's great to see how our town's youngsters helped to keep this old tradition alive.

If you would like to admire the work of the children and learn a little more about this 'olde' tradition, please pop into the Gill Nethercott Centre where the work is on display for a further week.... If you call in on Friday morning there's also the opportunity to visit the Friday market and enjoy a cuppa and a slice of cake. You might also like to pick up a walk leaflet and go in search of our local Oaks.

---------------------------------------------

Thank you to the After school Club for their magnificent Oak Tree, oak leaves and acorn people and thank you to Whitchurch in Bloom for creating the display in the Town Hall window and to our Assistant Town Clerk for 'encouraging' the ladies with a fabulous apple cake.

Thank you again to the Montessori Nursery children for their continued enthusiasm, captured on their display board and the wonderfully coloured acorns carefully arranged on their oak tree.
Did you know, that the original King Charles II Oak became a massive tourist attraction even during the king's lifetime, but souvenir hunters fatally damaged it by chipping off pieces of wood and branches. The tree you can visit today is an 18th century descendent of the original and is known as 'Son of Royal Oak'.

Whitchurch Walkers are Welcome footpath team celebrated with an away day to nearby Goodworth Clatford to admire the village's ancient oak still thriving in the riverside meadow and, following a short walk criss crossing the chalk stream, they finished up at the Royal Oak Goodworth Clatford for lunch... a very pleasant way to start planning this year's footpath cutting.

How did you celebrate 'Shick Shack' - Oak Apple Day?

WHITCHURCH ASSOCIATION who are responsible for the GNC post the following:

Annual General Meeting– the AGM of the WA was held on Saturday 24th January at the Gill Nethercott Centre.

New WA Trustee – The WA would still like to recruit another trustee. In particular, we would be very happy to welcome someone who also feels that they could contribute to the work of the charity, working with the Chair, and eventually perhaps taking on some of the necessary secretarial and administration work. If you think you might be interested, and would like to find out more about what might be involved, please give Denyse Coles a call (tel: 01256 893010) and arrange to have a discussion.

New website:

The GNC hosts a wide variety of regular activities for our local community, and is also available as a venue for weddings, children’s parties and other family events. It has a lovely view of a section of the River Test – not least through the newly-refurbished floor panel! It has a well-equipped kitchen, a large main hall, 2 other room areas of different sizes and it has a good stock of fold-away tables and new chairs. Virus-killer equipment is located in the main hall. Why not call in to see what’s on, or to check out the facilities if you are interested in hiring the centre for your special event?

Defibrillators – The Whitchurch Association will be providing further free defibrillator confidence-building sessions during 2026. These friendly, practical sessions are designed to help everyone feel more confident using a defibrillator in an emergency. If your group or organisation would benefit from a session, please get in touch with the Gill Nethercott Centre. A defibrillator locations map can be downloaded from the town website https://whitchurch.org.uk/your-community.

Walkers Are Welcome Whitchurch Hampshire (WAW) – follow us on Facebook

Annual Review Results – Each year, Whitchurch Walkers are Welcome has to demonstrate that the required standard for continued accreditation as a Walkers are Welcome town has been achieved, providing evidence regarding progress, achievements, partnerships and evidence of working with the tourism, countryside, public transport sectors, local authority and other communities. We are delighted that Whitchurch has, for the tenth year running, achieved the highest rating for each and every category. Thanks to all our hard-working WAW volunteer litter-pickers, those who joined teams working on path maintenance, and the various community groups, councillors and local businesses who provided their ongoing support. Thanks also go to the local landowners and the Countryside Access Team, who have worked with our team in order to improve access. Special events during 2025 included the Railway 200 celebrations where WAW, Whitchurch In Bloom, Whitchurch History Society and the Montessori Nursery came together to deliver the Railway Station birthday event and the two week exhibition at the GNC entitled “A Tale of Two Stations”. Again, special thanks to all those whose hard work made that such a great success. We were also partners to the 1st podcast in a series of ‘Choir Walks’; Wendy Helsby a member of Whitchurch History Society and walk leader for Whitchurch Wednesday Walks providing the commentary.

Local Walk Suggestions – Many suggestions for local walks (in and around the town, and also further afield), with full directions and maps, are available to download from the town website. While out walking, please remember to dress for the weather and have sensible footwear, particularly now that some paths are very muddy and slippery in some places.

Volunteer Activity – Many local services are now reliant on local volunteers, and that includes the maintenance of our local paths: litter-picking and vegetation clearances. Please consider joining our group of volunteers, helping to keep paths clear and tidy for walkers. Contact Barry Carter (tel: 01256 893216). Remember, you do not have to join in with all of the volunteer activities - any help you can provide, on a date/time that suits you, would however be most welcome. Details of volunteer tasks are circulated in advance, so you can choose to get involved only with tasks which suit you, and you are happy with taking on.
