Introducing A Brief History of A Victorian Funeral Director

WHITBY STEAMPUNK WEEKEND XX
Saturday 25th July
Whitby Pavilion
Upper Hall Stage 2:15pm

A talk by Funeral Director Emma Sparre-Newman covering how and why Victorian social conditions gave rise to the modern day funeral director and shaped so many funeral customs that still hold true today.

Every wondered why we send flowers?

Why funeral horses wear feather plumes?

Emma can explain it all.

Emma is the youngest daughter of a country vicar, it was her childhood ambition to be a funeral director and despite being side tracked into working in the costume department of the BBC, Emma has now been in the funeral profession for over thirty years, living and working in South East London.

When not working, Emma's time is spent either indulging in her passion for the aerial arts as a would be trapeze artiste, reading or accompanying her Antipoet husband to various gigs, festivals and events.

Wow, we know this one will be over subscribed so make sure you get your seat early!

THIS IS ANOTHER FREE ADMISSION PRESENTATION FROM WSW Events, held in Whitby Pavilion on the Upper Hall Stage.

THE CUREHEADS

The original tribute to the British godfathers of goth, The Cureheads have been together since 1990.

They have recreated the look, sound and atmosphere of shows by The Cure and have taken their show around the UK, Spain, France, Italy, Eastern Europe, South America, Japan and The USA.

Expect to hear some massive anthems including:

Just like Heaven, Inbetween Days, A Forest, Close To Me, Friday I’m in Love, Let’s Go to Bed, Lullaby, Lovesong, The Walk, Boys Don’t Cry, Pictures Of You, The Love Cats, Why Can’t I Be You and many more.

The band strives to re-create the experience of seeing a mid to late 1980s concert by The Cure, including not only the sound, but also the wardrobe, attitude, stage, light show and various video and computer images

SIOUXSIE & THE BUDGIEES

Special guests for the evening are Siouxsie & The Budgiees. From the Happy house to the Hong Kong Garden, the Budgiees aim to please any fans of the Gothic Punk Queen and her Banshees.

The UK based band strive to recreate the sounds, shapes and fashion-influencing style of, perhaps one of the most important influencers of the British Avant Garde scene.

The Budgiees are named after The Banshees drummer “Budgie”.

They play originals and covers made famous by The Banshees and occasionally are joined onstage by The Cureheads frontman to celebrate the time that Cure frontman Robert Smith was on guitar duty for Siouxsie & The Banshees.

🧛‍♂️🦇FREE TALK ANNOUNCEMENT 🦇🧛‍♂️

Event: Whitby Steampunk Weekend XX
Dates: 25th & 26th July
Venue: Whitby Pavilion

Subject: VIKINGS AND VAMPIRES
Presenter: PAUL FITZ-GEORGE
Date and time: Sunday 11:30 am
Where: Upper Hall Stage
Cost: FREE ENTRY

We are so excited to introduce another free for everyone to enjoy this intimate and exhilarating experience at our little event by the sea...how about this from esteemed author, historian and parapsychologist Mr. Paul Fitz~George!

In brief, the talk ‘Vikings and Vampires’ is all about the Norse mythology connected with Whitby when it came under the Danelaw after the 9th century Viking invasion.

It will include the similarity between Whitby’s Barghiest dog (a Hell hound) and the Viking Garmr (another Hell hound) that Stoker obviously used for his great hound that Dracula turns into on his leap from the ship at Tate Hill sands.

Also discussed will be Whitby’s ‘Waft' apparition, which is an even more deadly version of the Viking Vardogar.

There will be time after the talk for a short Q&A with Paul, and an opportunity to purchase books written by Paul too!
