My name is Debbie and I am the florist behind The Northern Flower Garden. I offer a variety of flower and wreath workshops throughout the year which I design to be accessible by all but also as an opportunity for you to build your knowledge and skills around floristry. Three very different workshops, but all with that lovely feeling of autumn, seasonal flowers and a little creative time.

Whether you've been coming along to my workshops for years or you've never tried floristry before, these are a chance to slow down, work with beautiful seasonal materials and learn something new. I'll guide you through the techniques along the way, and you'll have plenty of time to enjoy the process and create something lovely to take home.

And if you're stuck for ideas, our workshops can make a rather lovely gift too. 🎁

Welcome autumn with a little creativity... 🍂

There is something rather lovely about the changing seasons — the richer colours, beautiful foliage and that feeling that it's time to slow down and make the most of the cosy months ahead.

I'm delighted to be hosting an Autumn Wreath Workshop at Gibside Stables this September, where we'll create a beautiful fresh wreath to welcome the season into your home. 🌿

🍂 Autumn Wreath Workshop

We'll start by working with a freshly mossed wreath ring, learning how to bind and layer a selection of beautiful seasonal foliage to create a natural, abundant base.
I'll demonstrate each stage and share plenty of professional floristry tips and techniques along the way, so whether you're completely new to wreath-making or have some previous experience, you'll be supported throughout. Once your foliage base is complete, you can make it your own with a selection of autumnal embellishments.

And of course, we'll have plenty of time to chat, create and enjoy the beautiful surroundings of Gibside, with crafted drinks and homemade bakes from the National Trust team to keep the creativity flowing. ☕

Dahlias, late summer colour & a little creative time...

There is something special about dahlias. Their incredible range of colours, shapes and sizes make them great to work with, and they really come into their own towards the end of summer and I'm delighted to be returning to the beautiful Crook Hall Gardens in Durham for a special Dahlia Flower Arranging Workshop in September.

We'll be working with seasonal dahlias and complementary late-summer flowers to create a beautiful, natural arrangement inspired by the gardens around us.
Along the way, I'll demonstrate professional floristry techniques and we'll explore line, movement, shape, structure and placement, helping you understand how these elements come together to create an arrangement with balance and character.

We'll be working with plant-based Oasis Renewal Floral Foam, so sustainability remains an important part of the workshop too. 🌿

And, as always, this will be a relaxed and supportive workshop. Whether you're completely new to floristry or looking to develop your skills, you're very welcome.
There'll be plenty of time to slow down, enjoy the flowers, chat and be creative, with crafted drinks and homemade bakes from the National Trust team at Crook Hall Gardens to keep us going. ☕🍰

You'll leave with your own late-summer arrangement to take home and enjoy.

🌴 A Little Bit of Tenerife... and a Workshop Idea!

One of the things I love about going away is seeing flowers completely outside of my usual world.

I spent some time in Tenerife recently and, of course, I couldn't help noticing the incredible flowers everywhere. 🌺

My camera roll is full of Strelitzia, Heliconia, Anthurium, Calla Lilies and Agapanthus — although I have to say, the Agapanthus was quite something! A familiar favourite in our own gardens, but growing to a much more impressive scale out there. 💜

It got me thinking about just how much fun it would be to spend some time working with tropical flowers.

So... how would you feel about a Tropical Flowers Workshop? 🌴🌺

I'm imagining a workshop exploring some of those wonderful tropical blooms and foliage of palms and ferns, looking at how to work with their very different shapes, sizes, colours and textures, and how to bring them together into a beautiful arrangement.

Something a little different, a little exotic and, I think, great fun!

This is very much an idea at the moment, so I'd love to know...

🌿 Back from holiday... and straight into the to-do list!

I'm back from a lovely break feeling refreshed, recharged and... slightly overwhelmed by the length of my to-do list! 😂

But before I get stuck into all of that, I have a little autumn workshop news to share...

🍂 My Autumn Terrarium Workshop at Souter Lighthouse is now LIVE!
📅 Saturday 19th September
🕚 11am
💷 £50 per person

This is a slightly different workshop for me, and I'm really looking forward to it.
We'll explore the foundations of creating a healthy closed terrarium, including the different substrates and layers needed to create the right environment for your plants. We'll look at which plants work best, how to care for them, and then move on to the fun part... creating your own miniature autumnal landscape. 🍂

We'll explore balance, texture, composition and visual interest, with an autumnal twist running through the design.

It's a lovely opportunity to slow down, get creative and take home something that will continue to grow and change.

Just a quick update for anyone who has been keeping an eye on my autumn workshops...

There has been a venue change for our Autumn Wreath Workshop.

📍 New venue: Gibside

🍂 Same date, same workshop — just a new (and rather lovely!) setting.

So, if you were planning to join me, please make a note that we'll now be at Gibside rather than Souter Lighthouse.

☀️ Summer at Its Best...

I spotted this beautiful clump of Crocosmia at Crook Hall Gardens a couple of weeks ago, and it completely stopped me in my tracks. Isn't it stunning? ❤️

I think we're in that wonderful moment when summer gardens are really at their best. Everywhere you look there's something new coming into flower.

The roses are still giving their all, the hydrangeas are beginning to shine, the sweet peas are filling the air with perfume... and then along comes Crocosmia, bringing those fiery oranges and reds that seem to glow in the sunshine.

It's such an inspiring time of year to be a florist. 😊

💐 A Huge Thank You!

A big thank you to all the lovely ladies who joined me for my Summer Flower Arrangement Workshop at Crook Hall Gardens on Saturday. 💚

We had such a lovely morning together, surrounded by beautiful summer flowers, plenty of creativity and lots of good conversation.

Just look at these gorgeous arrangements! ✨

This was a brand new workshop for me, using a steel grass base to create a natural design base and I have to say, I absolutely loved the results. Every arrangement was so different, and the finished designs looked stunning.

I think this one will definitely be making a return in 2027! 🌿

Thank you as well for all your lovely feedback. It really does mean a lot to hear that you're enjoying the workshops, and it's always such a pleasure to welcome so many familiar faces back alongside those joining me for the first time.

Thank you for spending part of your weekend with me, and I hope your arrangements are still bringing a little bit of summer into your homes. 🌸

🍂 Autumn Is Coming...

I know... I know... it's only July! ☀️

But here's the thing... florists are always working one season ahead, so whilst many of you are making the most of the sunshine, my mind has already wandered into autumn. 🍁

I'm thinking rich colours, beautiful textures and all the wonderful things that make this time of year so special.

For me, it's the season of...
🎃 Pumpkin flowers
🍁 Autumn wreaths
🌾 Harvest-inspired designs
🕸 Crisp cobwebbed mornings
🔥Warm cosy evenings

I love every season, but there's something about autumn that feels very creative for me. The colours become richer, the textures more interesting, and nature gives us so much to work with.

So, I'd love to know...
