A huge thank you to everyone who joined me for the Summer Meadow Flower Workshop at Gibside on Saturday 🙏

We had such a lovely morning together, creating relaxed, meadow-inspired arrangements filled with beautiful seasonal flowers, texture and movement. It was wonderful to spend time with such a lovely group and see each design develop its own unique character.

One of the nicest parts of running these workshops is hearing what people take away from the experience afterwards. Elizabeth kindly sent me this message, which really made my day:
"Debbie, just to say thank you for providing yet another fantastic workshop at Gibside yesterday. It was the perfect setting to immerse myself in floral therapy. I am so proud to display my final masterpiece in my front window!"

Comments like this mean such a lot to me. It's never just about the flowers; it's about taking a little time out, learning something new, and enjoying a few creative hours in good company. 💚

A huge thank you as well to everyone at Gibside for their warm welcome, beautiful surroundings and delicious refreshments.

If you've been thinking about joining a workshop, I still have the last few spaces available on my Summer Flower Bouquet Workshop at Souter Lighthouse on Saturday 20th June at 11am.

We'll be creating beautiful hand-tied bouquets using the spiral technique with some of the best flowers summer has to offer. Tickets are £50 per person.

🔨 Studio Update #1

Well, things are definitely moving now!

This week has been all about stripping everything back. Floors are coming up, walls are coming down, and for a brief moment it all looks a little more "building site" than "flower studio" 😅

I won't lie, it's slightly scary seeing everything taken back to its bare bones, but there's also something incredibly satisfying about it. It's a chance to start with a clean slate and make sure everything is done properly from the very beginning.

As tempting as it is to rush ahead to the pretty bits, we're taking the time to get things right now, even if it means living with a little disruption in the short term!

It's already helping me imagine what the space could become — and I already have my eye on a gorgeous Belfast sink that will perfectly in this room 😍

There is still a long way to go, but thank you for following along and cheering us on. I'll keep sharing updates as we go, and hopefully before too long you'll start to see the flower studio emerging from beneath all the rubble! 💚

🌸 Flower Confession Time...

What's the flower that always makes you smile? 😀

It's such a difficult question because I seem to have a different favourite every season! But if I was really pushed, I'd probably choose paperwhites in spring and roses in summer. 💚

There's something so special about paperwhites. I love the way those delicate white blooms seem to glow in the early spring light. Their tiny star-like petals bring optimism after the long winter months, and they're always a joy to work with.

Then there are roses... 🌹
What can I say? The variety is endless. From soft, romantic garden roses to more structured varieties, there's a rose for every mood and season. For me, they perfectly capture the beauty of the English garden, which has always been one of my biggest sources of inspiration in my floristry.

So now I'm curious...

🌿 What's the flower that always makes you smile?

I'd love to hear your favourites in the comments 💬

There’s something rather special about spending a few hours with flowers 💐

No rushing. No deadlines. No endless to-do lists...

Just a table full of beautiful seasonal flowers, a chance to learn something new, a cuppa, and a few hours spent creating something with your own hands.

That’s exactly what we’ll be doing at my Summer Flower Bouquet Workshop at Souter Lighthouse on Saturday 20th June, 11am ☀️

Together, we’ll create a hand-tied bouquet using the spiral technique, working with some of the best flowers the season has to offer. I'll guide you through each step in a relaxed and supportive way, whether you've arranged flowers before or are trying it for the very first time.

You’ll leave with a beautifully presented bouquet, a few new skills, new friends and hopefully feeling a little more refreshed than when you arrived 💚

If that sounds like your kind of morning, you can find more details here:

🌸 Just 2 spaces left!

There are now only 2 places remaining for my Summer Meadow Flower Workshop at Gibside on Saturday 6th June at 11am ☀️

In this workshop, we’ll be creating a relaxed, meadow-inspired arrangement using beautiful seasonal flowers full of movement, texture and natural colour. Think airy stems, soft summer tones, and that slightly wild, gathered-from-the-garden feel.

Perfect for anyone who loves flowers, enjoys getting creative, or simply fancies a few calm and supportive hours surrounded by seasonal blooms 💐

Beginners are always very welcome 😀

I just wanted to say a huge thank you for all the lovely comments, messages and words of support following my last post about the new studio 💚

We really appreciate the kindness and encouragement you have shown us. It means a lot and being part of a village community makes this feel especially special. 🌿

For those who have expressed interested in my flower and wreath workshops, I’ll pop the link to my email list below. That’s where I share all workshop dates first when they go live — particularly helpful at Christmas when spaces tend to fill very quickly! ✨

And excitingly… the builders started today! 🔨

There’s still a lot to do before opening, but I’ll keep sharing little updates along the way as the space gradually starts to come together. I can’t wait to welcome you in when it’s ready 💚

Well… at last, I finally have the keys to my new premises! 🔑✨

After what feels like a very long time in the making, The Northern Flower Garden will soon have a new home in the old dentist surgery in Whitburn — and I honestly can’t wait to get started.

There’s still a very long list of boring (but necessary!) admin jobs to tackle first, followed by a bit of building work and plenty of organising… but it already feels incredibly exciting to finally be here.

Over time, I’ll be hosting workshops from the new studio alongside my lovely National Trust venues, and I’m so looking forward to welcoming you into the space.

Alongside my usual seasonal one-off workshops, I’m also hoping to introduce:
✨ A foundation floristry course
✨ DIY wedding flower workshops
✨ More opportunities to learn, create and spend time with flowers together.

It feels like an exciting new chapter beginning… and I can’t wait to get started!

More updates soon... (once I’ve survived the paperwork 😅)

☀️ Five flowers I always look forward to in summer…

As much as I love spring flowers, there’s something about summer that feels so abundant, with all those soft shapes, airy textures, and flowers that seem to fall naturally into place.

These are five I always get excited to work with each year…

✨ Peonies
For all their drama and romance. One minute they’re tightly curled buds, the next they’ve exploded into huge, ruffled blooms. Completely worth their short season.

✨ Snapdragons
I love the height and line they bring to arrangements. They add such beautiful structure, and there’s something comfortably old fashioned about them too.

✨ Cosmos
Delicate, floaty, and a little bit wild. Cosmos always bring softness and movement — the sort of flower that makes an arrangement feel relaxed and effortless.

✨ Roses
Especially the more natural, garden-style varieties with their scent, texture and beautifully imperfect shapes. Summer roses can be absolutely stunning.

✨ Ammi Majus
Possibly one of my favourites for weaving everything together. Light, frothy and delicate, it creates that airy, meadow-like feel I’m always drawn to in summer designs.

I’m sure this list changes every year depending on what’s growing and inspiring me… but these are definitely some of my summer staples and can often be found in my flower workshops with the National Trust.

With spring in full swing, I’m already finding myself thinking about summer flowers… ☀️

Those looser, more abundant arrangements filled with movement, texture, and that slightly wild, just-picked-from-the-garden feel. Think delicate cosmos, soft sweet peas, airy grasses, and all those beautiful in-between stems that make summer designs feel so effortless. 🌿

It’s such a different rhythm to spring. Everything feels a little more relaxed, a little more generous… and there’s so much freedom in the way the flowers move and fall into place.

This is something I always love to explore in my summer workshops — working with seasonal flowers, embracing their natural shapes, and creating designs that feel light, abundant and full of life.

I’ll be sharing more of what’s coming up very soon, but in the meantime I’d love to know…
