My name is Debbie and I am the florist behind The Northern Flower Garden. I offer a variety of flower and wreath workshops throughout the year which I design to be accessible by all but also as an opportunity for you to build your knowledge and skills around floristry. Let's talk about Swags... a little something different for your front door this Christmas… 🎄

Not everyone wants a traditional Christmas wreath, and that's where our Christmas Door Swag comes in!

I love the natural, slightly more contemporary look of a door swag, with its beautiful layers of festive foliage, seasonal decorations and a lovely ribbon to finish it off. It's a wonderful way to bring a little Christmas greenery to your front door, without going for the traditional circular wreath.

At my Christmas Door Swag Workshop at Gibside, I'll guide you through creating your own design from scratch, using fresh seasonal foliage and festive finishing touches.

And don't worry if you've never tried anything like this before! Our workshops are friendly, relaxed and fully supported, with both myself and my mam on hand to help you along the way. ❤️

It's a lovely way to enjoy some creative time, learn a few floristry techniques and head home with something beautiful you've made yourself.

🍂 An autumn favourite… which would you choose?

One of the things I love most about this time of year is all the beautiful natural details that start to appear. As a florist, I'm always noticing the little things — the colours, shapes and textures that make autumn so special.

There are so many lovely things to collect inspiration from at this time of year, but I've narrowed it down to four of my favourites…

❤️ Berries — I love the pops of colour they bring, from deep reds to rich oranges. They add such a lovely detail to autumn arrangements and wreaths.

🍁 Changing leaves — the colours are just incredible! From golden yellows and burnt oranges to deep reds and beautiful russets, every leaf seems to have its own little pattern.

🌾 Seedheads — perhaps a little underrated, but I love their shapes and textures. They add so much interest to floral designs, even when there isn't a flower in sight!

🌲 Pinecones — such a simple natural treasure, but full of character. I love their texture, and they're lovely for adding a little woodland feel to seasonal displays.

I think autumn gives us so much to appreciate if we take a moment to look around us. You don't always need a beautiful flower to find something inspiring!

🎄 A little extra Christmas wreath-making magic! 🎄

My Traditional Christmas Wreath Workshop at Gibside has sold out, so I’m delighted to be adding another date at Crook Hall Gardens for anyone who missed out or is thinking about making their own wreath this Christmas. ✨

This is the whole shebang — we'll start by mossing your wreath ring from scratch, then bind on a beautiful selection of fresh, festive foliage to create a lovely full base. Once your wreath is taking shape, you can choose from a gorgeous selection of Christmas decorations and festive bows to make it completely your own. 🎀

We'll take our time over the process, with up to three hours to create your wreath, so there's no need to rush. We'll also add a backing to help protect your wreath and your door, leaving you with a beautiful, finished decoration ready to hang and enjoy throughout the festive season.

Whether you've been making wreaths for years or have never picked up a mossing pin before, you're very welcome. Our workshops are always friendly, relaxed and supportive, with both myself and my mam on hand to guide you through every step. ❤️

🍂 A little autumn wreath treat… 🍂

My autumn wreaths from last Saturday’s workshop have been proving rather popular, so I’ve decided to make up a small, limited number to sell from the studio in Whitburn this week.

If you missed the workshop but have been admiring the wreaths, this might be your chance to bring a little bit of autumn home. 🍁

Each wreath is made on a 12" mossed wreath frame and decorated with beautiful seasonal touches including pinecones, dried solanum and a lovely bow.

🍂 A little thank you from Gibside

A huge thank you to everyone who joined me at Gibside last Saturday for my Autumn Wreath Workshop. 🌿

The autumn colours were just incredible, and with the sunshine shining through, they seemed to glow even more beautifully. There really is something so special about this time of year — the changing leaves, berries, seedheads and all those wonderful autumn textures. 🍁

I loved seeing everyone's wreaths come together, each one completely unique and full of your own creative touches.

And I'm back at beautiful Gibside again this Saturday for my Autumn Harvest Flower Arranging Workshop where we'll be working with seasonal flowers, autumnal foliage, grasses and apples gathered from the Gibside estate to create a beautiful harvest-inspired arrangement to take home. 🍎

🍂 Last call for our Autumn Harvest Flower Arranging Workshop at Gibside!

If you're looking for something lovely to do this Saturday, love flowers and all things autumn, and fancy spending a few creative hours exploring the beautiful Gibside estate, then this workshop could be just the thing for you. 🌿🍎

On Saturday 3rd October at 11am, I'll be at Gibside for a relaxed and creative Autumn Harvest Flower Arranging Workshop.

Working in a rustic basket, you'll arrange a beautiful selection of seasonal flowers alongside autumnal foliage and grasses, with apples gathered from the Gibside estate. Together, these will create a design full of warmth, texture and the rich colours that make autumn such a special time of year. 🍂

I'll guide you through each step, sharing professional floristry techniques and showing you how to combine shape, colour and texture to create a naturally abundant display inspired by the harvest season.

Whether you're completely new to flower arranging or have some experience already, you'll be warmly welcomed and supported throughout. 🌿

And, of course, there'll be plenty of time to enjoy the beautiful surroundings and embrace that lovely autumn feeling at Gibside.

🍂 What makes a good autumn wreath?

For me, creating a beautiful autumn wreath is about so much more than simply adding orange leaves and a few berries to a wreath ring. It's about bringing together a thoughtful combination of texture, shape, colour and natural materials to create a design that feels balanced, interesting and full of seasonal character.

Here are a few of the things I consider when creating an autumn wreath:
🌿 Texture
Combining different textures helps to give a wreath depth and interest. Think soft moss, papery seed heads, dried elements and more structural natural materials.

🍂 Different shapes
Using a variety of shapes prevents a wreath from feeling flat or predictable. Rounded leaves, spiky details, arching grasses and more delicate elements can all work together to create movement and contrast.

🌾 Seedheads and grasses
These are some of my favourite materials to work with. They bring height, movement and a lovely sense of wildness to a design, while adding those beautiful autumnal textures.

🍎 Berries and autumn fruits
Berries, fruits and other seasonal details can introduce colour, shape and a little abundance. They help to capture the richness of the season and make each wreath feel unique.

🌰 Interesting natural elements
I love looking beyond the obvious materials. Pine cones, seed pods, twigs, dried fruits and other natural finds can add character and unexpected details to a wreath.

🎨 Colour
And autumn doesn't have to mean orange! 🍂 Although those warm autumnal tones are beautiful, I also love exploring deeper reds, burgundy, plum, soft greens, muted browns and even more unusual colour combinations.

The most successful wreaths often come from experimenting with colour and texture, rather than following a strict formula.

Thank you to all who joined me at Souter Lighthouse on Saturday for our Autumn Terrarium Workshop. 🥰

I had such a lovely time creating together, chatting, sharing ideas and watching all your beautiful terrariums take shape.

And those mushrooms! 🍄 I absolutely loved seeing how everyone incorporated them into their designs. They added such a lovely little touch of woodland magic!

Thank you for making the workshop such an enjoyable and creative few hours. It was a real pleasure spending time with you all, and I hope you're enjoying your little planted worlds at home. 🌿
