🧜‍♂️ What did Nemo see? 👀

One of the standout sculptures at Sandworld Sand Sculpture Festival - Weymouth this year is What Nemo Saw, created by Italian sand artist Leonardo Ugolini.

Seen through a unique fisheye perspective, the sculpture reveals a beautifully detailed medieval town from above. Rather than simply recreating a place, Leonardo describes it as a dream, a memory and a child’s imagination brought to life in sand.

With more than 30 years of sculpting experience, Leonardo has been creating intricate sand art since childhood. This was his second visit to SandWorld, having previously carved The Clipper Race for the park’s opening season back in 2011.

The remarkable sculpture took 10 days to complete and was Leonardo’s first opportunity to create a sand artwork on such a large scale. Using his favourite tool, a mini spatula, he has packed the piece with extraordinary fine detail that rewards a closer look.

When you visit SandWorld, take a few moments to stand back, then move in closer. You’ll discover something new every time you look.

We have absolutely LOVED watching Race Against the Tide 💛

We couldn’t be prouder of our incredibly talented SandWorld sculptors Lisa Lindqvist Art and Rachel Stubbs Art for taking on the challenge and showcasing their amazing skills on the BBC series 👏

Introducing Bagpuss, masterfully sculpted by Lisa Lindqvist Art ☀️🙂

For Lisa, this sculpture came with an extra helping of nostalgia. Bagpuss was a childhood favourite, and years later she introduced the much-loved programme to her own daughters.

“There was always something magical and wonderfully imaginative about the programme, and I found the slow pace very calming.”

Bringing that magic to life in sand wasn’t quite as simple as it might look! Lisa had to carefully capture the character of the famously soft and sleepy Bagpuss while working within an existing section of sand – and there was even a collapsed cheek along the way 👀

Of course, Bagpuss wouldn’t be complete without the little church mice, which Lisa particularly enjoyed creating 🐭 Her trusty clay ribbon carving tools, which she also uses in her ceramic work, helped create all those wonderful little details.

It’s been an exciting year for Lisa, who you may also have spotted recently on the BBC’s Race Against the Tide, where she and her teammate made it all the way to the final 🌊👏

🦁 Do we have any Lion King fans here? 👀

Take a closer look at our Lion King sand sculpture, masterfully created by talented Italian sculptors Davide Biserni and Elisa Sordelli.

From Mufasa and little Simba on Pride Rock to Scar and the hyenas, plus Timon, Pumbaa, Rafiki and Nala – so many iconic characters were brought to life in incredible detail using just sand and water 🤯

Davide and Elisa spent a week creating the sculpture, carefully capturing the expressions and personalities of each character – with a helping hand from SandWorld manager Angelika, a huge Lion King fan herself!

☀️ SandWorld is open daily until 8th November 2026, so there’s still plenty of time to see it for yourself alongside our other giant sand sculptures.
