At Portland Pirate Day, Emma, our roving reporter, caught up with volunteers from Cycling Without Age Weymouth and Portland.
The groups are volunteer-led initiatives providing free trishaw rides for older people and those with limited mobility, helping passengers get outdoors, enjoy fresh air, and reconnect with the local coastline and community atmosphere. During the event, the team were out and about engaging with visitors and sharing the purpose behind their rides, which focus on companionship, movement, and simple enjoyment of being outside.
Emma’s conversations highlighted how the initiative continues to bring people together at local events like Portland Pirate Day, where community spirit and accessibility meet in a very visible, hands-on way.
There’s still time to pop down to Portland Pirate Day and enjoy a trishaw ride as part of the swashbuckling fun which is all happening in Easton Park on Portland until 6pm.
