The power of hair

Museum of Liverpool

''What does your hair say about you? Which hairstyles are forever linked with Liverpool and its unique identity?

From mop tops to modern-day rollers and curly blows, explore hair, hairstyles, and hairdressers in the city over time in this new photographic display.

Featuring images from the Museum of Liverpool’s collections, brought together for the first time, the images reveal the social and cultural impact of hair on local identity, showcase how salons and barbers are vital local community spaces, and celebrate everyday style queens who epitomise the power of hair.

Work by renowned local photographers Alex Hurst and Abdullah Badwi is featured, along with Paul Trevor and The Caravan Gallery who have documented the city, revealing stories of family and community.''

Anyone thinking about people to nominate??

Congratulations to Alex Merry on receiving an EFDSS Gold Badge!

Alex is an illustrator, portrait painter and folk artist. Her work spans from intricately painted pet portraits to large scale folk beasts and ritual masks. As a founding member of Boss Morris, she breathes new life into ancient customs through performance, craft and reinvention – conjuring a dream-like world rooted in folk tradition.

Gold Badges are presented for unique or outstanding contributions to folk music, dance or song and/or exceptional contributions to the Society’s work.

Anyone can make a nomination, which should be seconded by one other person. The deadline for nominations for 2026 is 31 March 2026.
