as I’m not able to get out much lately, I’ve been going back through old photographs and processing them properly. Below is the full sequence of a grey heron successfully hunting and catching a fish at my local lake (- I posted a solitary shot from it recently). It all happened in a matter of seconds. Out of seemingly nowhere the heron swooped in, hovered, then struck.

I’ve converted the sequence to black and white as I wasn’t happy with the colour version, it was a bit blue and dreary. I think it works really well in B&W though.

1.) Hovering over the target before moving to a better position.
2.) The ripples giving away the prey's position (though herons can see through reflections on the water's surface).
3.) The strike.
4.) Eyes locked on target all the way.
5.) Success!
6.) A good sized meal.
7.) And away.

If you want a photography challenge, try photographing swallows while they're hunting. They're definitely up there with the trickier subjects, but there are tactics that help slightly increase the chances of a keeper or two. Limiting the range of your focus to where you know their flight paths will take them helps a lot. As does simple observation, watching their patterns and habits to help you predict where they'll end up during their otherwise erratic movements. Obviously you need a really high shutter speed, too, but the rest is effectively spray and pray, taking as many shots as you can and hoping some are on target and in focus!
