If you haven’t already It’s definitely time to trim your tomatoes and encourage as many fruits to ripen. I remove any flowers as these will not produce fruit this year, any side shoots and most of the leaves. This allows increased exposure to light and encourages the plant to put energy into ripening the fruit. Some of you may be way ahead of me on this and some may have brought your tomatoes in to ripen on a windowsill next to some bananas! I like to give my tomatoes as much time as possible on the vine. Being in the south of England I am hopeful we will still have just enough sunshine and warm days left 🤞

It may be autumn but things are not slowing down in the garden just yet! Lots of tidying, weeding and preparing the soil going on alongside making sure I get all my direct sown hardy annuals in! The plants in the greenhouse are coming on well and I still have an abundance of tomatoes! 🍅 😊

These may be the final fresh cut flowers of the season…but they are still stunning! As autumn draws in after a hot and dry summer the vibrant colours are slowly fading and efforts turn to collecting seed, tending to the soil and sowing many varieties ready for next year!

It’s gone! My wonderful neighbour gave me a helping hand to break the block into smaller pieces and move it out of the hole. Thank goodness it’s gone…it means I can now get creative with this border and my plants will be so much happier now their roots will have somewhere to go!

Having a redesign of the back border and the spade hit something solid…never did I expect to find a huge stone cube buried there! I have managed to dig around it and somehow get a sack truck underneath…but now I’m stuck! 😳 why is there a stone cube in my garden? What is it for? And most importantly…What do I do next?

BUTTS…are you putting yours to good use? Have you thought about harvesting grey water? I’ve installed a water butt to collect shower water to use on the flower beds. If you decided to give this a go just be careful not to use grey water on anything you want to eat and ensure that water is used promptly to reduce the risk of bacterial growth. The RHS have an article about grey water and say it can be used for up to 6 weeks in periods of drought.
