Two out of the many frustrating things for and alike, are as follows:
1▪
You have a client who does not know what they want created. They simply tell you "do what you do best."
In some cases this is a creative's perfect scenario, but on the other hand this could be a nightmare also.
From experience, the client is likely to have spent weeks/months collecting amazing videos or image references from various sources whether it be from , , , or from someone else's , and because they underestimate the TIME it takes to create quality results, they naturally believe it's a matter of throwing a light on a stand, whipping out the camera and BooM!
Well WE know it does't quite work like that...
This leads on to frustration number two...
2▪
CLIENT - "Hey, we want the / to look like these images we have bookmarked for inspiration."
YOU - "Yes that's absolutely fine. May I suggest that you allow more than 1-2 hours to "do what I do best" and achieve the highest level of quality to best represent you/your business?"
CLIENT - "Yeah I totally agree, BUT we don't have the time/budget to allow it."
YOU - "That is understandable, as running a business does eat up the time.
Purely out of respect, If you truly require similar videos/images that match the quality of references you showed me earlier, then there may have to be a few compromises to compensate for the lack of time/budget you have available."
So here we go again, another 20%-ER
who wants the whole world in 1-2 hours, but It could take over 2 hours just to travel to London, not to mention the return.
If you're anything like me, you would prefer to have all the time it takes to create your "best work" with a slight compromise on rates. Nevertheless, you need to realise that 20%-ERS don't invest in VALUE of service, they invest in DISCOUNT service.
In such a saturated market, Photographers/Cinematographers need to learn how to balance out the scales, without being afraid to say to their client: "I am happy to recommend someone else who may be able to meet your needs."
As nothing is more satisfying than to look back at your work and feel proud that you were hired to create your best work.
