🍰 AFTERNOON TEA WAS A TRIUMPH! 🥂

What a wonderful day we had at Wallasey Masonic Hall!

More than 60 people came through our doors for guided tours to discover this beautiful historic building—and 20 guests joined us for a very special afternoon tea.

With vintage china, freshly prepared sandwiches, delicious cakes and scones, all served within one of Wallasey’s hidden architectural gems, it proved to be a tremendous success.

The reaction from our guests was fantastic, so we’re delighted to say that afternoon tea will be returning to The Masonic!

These gentlemen have been looking down from the walls of Wallasey Masonic Hall for quite a while…

And their stories connect our building directly with the history of Wallasey itself.

Among the historic portraits on display are Harry Cook, who was Town Clerk of Wallasey from 1910–20, and Charles Hewetson-Nelson, the Hall Company’s first Secretary and Mayor of Wallasey in 1920–21.

The portraits themselves have an interesting history too. They were painted by John Archibald Alexander Berrie, an accomplished portrait artist whose subjects included King George V, Queen Mary and numerous prominent Liverpool and Wallasey figures.

It’s one of the things we hope visitors discover on Wirral Heritage Open Day: the history of Wallasey Masonic Hall isn’t just about Freemasonry.

It’s also the story of the people, architecture and civic life of Wallasey over more than a century.

What actually goes on inside a Masonic Lodge Room? 🤔

It’s probably one of the questions people are most curious about — so on Sunday 20th September, you can come inside and have a look for yourself.
During our Heritage Open Day we’ll show visitors around Wallasey Masonic Hall, including our principal Lodge Room, and explain some of what they are looking at.

Why are particular chairs positioned in the East, West and South?
What does the black and white chequered floor represent?
Why do Freemasons wear aprons?
What are the columns, symbols and different pieces of furniture for?
And what exactly do Freemasons do when they meet?

You don’t need to know anything about Freemasonry before you arrive — in fact, being curious is rather the point.
Come along, explore an extraordinary old Wallasey building and ask us the questions you’ve always wondered about.

☕ And why not make an afternoon of it?

We’ll also be serving Afternoon Tea inside the Hall, with sandwiches, homemade fruit scones with clotted cream & strawberry jam, homemade cakes and unlimited tea and freshly brewed filter coffee.
£17.50 per person, or £22.50 with a glass of Prosecco 🥂

Afternoon Tea is available at 1pm, 2pm and 3pm and must be booked in advance.
