We’re looking for a new Visitor Welcome & Cafe Supervisor to join our team! ☕️

This role oversees the day to day delivery of The Art House’s visitor welcome and café, ensuring a high-quality offer and an excellent, inclusive experience for all visitors.

Key Responsibilities include:

- Coordinating the daily workload of the Visitor Welcome Team
- Overseeing café operations
- Supporting the consistent delivery of high standards of customer service, food safety, stock management and operational efficiency

This is a permanent contract, with working hours of 22.5 hours per week over 3 days (ideally alternate Saturdays), the salary is £26,000 per annum FTE, pro rata to the contracted hours.

The Art House recently partnered with Te Tuhi in New Zealand to present a new international pilot programme supporting disabled visual artists from Aotearoa to undertake a two-month residency in Wakefield, UK.

We’re pleased to be able to share a few photographs from chosen Artists Stace Robertson Stace Robertson and Milly Hampton MILLY HAMPTON from their time on residency so far!

Robertson shares: “Over the residency so far, I have been focused on technique and concepts; refining skills in my ceramic work across hand building and wheel throwing and exploring disability culture and knowledge which are central themes in my work. I’ve also been able to see the Design and Disability exhibition at the V&A in Dundee and History In Our Bones: Uncovering Stories of Disability Through Time at The McManus: Dundee’s Art Gallery & Museum both of which were incredibly powerful and resonated deeply which led to lots of new ideas to explore. It’s been so valuable to have the time to push ideas in different directions and see where they take me.”

Hampton shares: “While at The Art House I have been researching and developing my project Motif F377: Crip Time. I have been learning new print techniques in the print room and using illustration to explore nonlinear time in folklore and personal narratives.”

We’re excited to follow their journeys and see where they take their creative practices next!

This World Mental Health Day, we’re reflecting on the powerful role creativity and art can play in shaping experiences of care.

Our current exhibition, Hospital Rooms: What Art Can Change, explores how contemporary art can transform some of the most complex mental health settings in the UK.

Created by Hospital Rooms in partnership with South West Yorkshire Partnership Teaching NHS Foundation Trust, the two-year project brought 15 contemporary artists into forensic wards and Psychiatric Intensive Care Units at Fieldhead Hospital in Wakefield and Kendray Hospital in Barnsley.

Through 50 in-person workshops with patients, staff and creative partners, artists developed permanent artworks shaped by the spaces, conversations and experiences of the people who use them.

The exhibition brings together documentation, reproductions and new works from this remarkable project – inviting us to consider what art can change, and what it can mean to bring creativity and colour into places of care.

During our Open Studios event, you’ll have the opportunity to explore the working environments of some of Wakefield’s most exciting contemporary artists, designers, and makers. See where ideas take shape, watch live demonstrations, and learn more about the techniques, tools, and inspirations behind a wide range of creative practices, from painting and printmaking to ceramics, textiles, and digital media 🧑‍🎨

Open Studio’s offers you the chance to engage directly with artists, hear the stories behind their work, and experience the atmosphere of a thriving creative hub, typically not open to the public!

Original artwork will be available to purchase throughout the event, offering a unique opportunity to support local talent. 🛍️

📣 NEW ARTIST RESIDENCY OPPORTUNITY 📣

The Art House is supporting Wakefield Council to invite contemporary artists to apply for a new funded residency exploring the stories, lives and histories held within and around Wakefield’s Civic Art Collection.

While formal portraits can show us a face, it cannot tell the viewer much about a life. The people in the frames are connected to the district’s civic, political, industrial and social history, but delving into Wakefield’s archives and collection reveals more interesting stories.

We are looking for an artist who is excited by the possibility of looking beyond the paintings. The residency offers time and space for an artist to delve deeper, spend time with the collection, follow threads through archives and research, encounter gaps and contradictions, and explore the lives and histories that sit beyond these formal images.

We welcome applications from contemporary artists working in any medium or across disciplines. A support package includes £3,000 for fees, materials and travel. Accommodation, studio and free access to our Maker Spaces are also included.
