🚶‍♂️ The final leg of an incredible journey! 💙

We had the great pleasure of welcoming the Prostate Cymru team to the Glen-Yr-Afon House Hotel as they reached the final stages of their incredible Walk of Wales challenge.

And what a challenge it has been! The team are now on Day 42 of 44, walking from Redbrook to Sudbrook today, before continuing on to Newport and finally Cardiff, where they will complete their epic journey. 👏

The goal is to raise an amazing £300,000 to help Prostate Cymru continue their vital work supporting men and families across Wales and raising awareness of prostate cancer. 💙

💕 Love was certainly in the air at the Glen-Yr-Afon House Hotel last weekend as we welcomed Audrey (Alison) and Greg back to celebrate their first wedding anniversary with us.

It only seems like yesterday that they were saying "I do" here on 2nd August last year, and it was wonderful to see them return to celebrate such a special milestone.

What a lovely story... a tale of two Tomlinsons. ❤️

This weekend we had the great pleasure of welcoming David Tomlinson to the Glen-Yr-Afon House Hotel while attending the wedding of his lifelong friend's daughter at the beautiful Usk Castle.

Although it was David's first visit to the hotel, it wasn't the first visit for the Tomlinson family. Back in the mid-1980s, David's father – also named David – stayed with us while following his local cricket team, the Fallow Bucks, as they played Usk CC, with David's brother also part of the team.

David Tomlinson Snr is, of course, remembered by millions around the world for his unforgettable role as George Banks in the classic Disney film Mary Poppins. Our very own Alex still remembers taking an early morning tea tray to his room and recalls what a true gentleman he was.

We're sure that cup of tea would have gone down perfectly with... just a spoonful of sugar! ☕🥄

It's always wonderful to hear stories that connect generations of guests, and we were delighted to welcome the Tomlinson family back to the Glen-Yr-Afon after all these years.

Total Tax Burden for hospitality!!

I’ve been quite surprised over the last 24 hours as to how many people don’t appreciate the significant difference between the total tax burden for hospitality compared with other sectors.

As an example, supermarkets (also food and drink) pay an estimated 8% to 11% of their total revenue in combined taxes. A pub or restaurant pays a crushing 28% to 35% of its turnover directly to the government.

This means a hospitality business carries a tax burden that is three/four times heavier relative to its revenue.

The UK tax system inherently protects the automated, low-margin, zero-rated grocery model of supermarkets while aggressively taxing hospitality businesses on their land footprint, their reliance on human workers, and a punishing 20% flat consumer VAT on everything they serve.

When a customer spends £100.00 at a restaurant table, £16.67 is instantly stripped away in VAT. Once you add rising employer National Insurance, and property rates, the government takes between £28.00- £35.00 of every £100.00 spent over the bar.

Andy Burnham’s recent Business Rates reduction was a positive step—but it is a drop in the ocean. This minor relief is easily wiped out by the major hikes in Employer National Insurance and National Minimum Wage.

Over 16,000 hospitality venues have already collapsed since the pandemic, because the current tax framework makes survival incredibly difficult.

Independent pubs and restaurants need a 10% hospitality VAT rate to stop a broken tax system from killing it.

🌞 What a day! 🌞

A huge THANK YOU to everyone who joined us yesterday for our Garden BBQ! What an incredible afternoon we had! The sun was shining, the atmosphere was buzzing, and it was wonderful to see so many smiling faces enjoying the day. 🌿🎶

A massive thank you to Mighty Fozzy for the fantastic live music and to Adrian & Rosemary from Pigs on a Spit for serving up an absolutely delicious selection from the barbecue. You were all amazing!

Lovely to see people enjoying the Boules, Giant Jenga and Giant Connect 4.

Most of all, thank you to all our wonderful guests for making it such a memorable event. We loved spending the afternoon with you and can't wait to do it all again!

It was great to welcome back another fantastic group of Caterham 7s to the Glen-Yr-Afon House Hotel, this time for a belated Fish & Chips Run! 🏎️🍟

There's something rather special about seeing these iconic cars all tucked up for the night, ready for another day of enjoying the wonderful roads of Wales.
