Friday Feel-Good Feedback this week is changing the view from Westminster to West Cornwall.

I wasn't sure how to beat some of the event experiences and meetings of the last fortnight.

But time off with family does it every time.

Nothing beats escaping for recharge, family time and working mornings only with these views and weather afterwards. What a scorchio week to be enjoying the best of the UK (& lots of scones and Rattler)

Time to step back, breathe and plan in order to lean in further to new ideas and opportunities later this year.

SATS. GCSEs. A-Levels. Finals. Exam chapter is here. And the return of my only recurring dream/nightmare in life.

Last Friday, I posted about the pressures of exams at this time of year. For the kids clearly, but also for any parents in our workplaces and networks.

It was the last school day for my no. 2 of 3.

Today it's day 1 of A Levels.
Only 5 weeks to go!

That's a fair time to keep momentum and focus going and keep stress levels under control.
For everyone in the house.

I can't remember sitting my A Levels. And yet I have 1 recurring dream in life.

I've missed an A Level exam.
The bu**er just keeps coming back.

I get this dream not just when exams are in our life but whenever I'm doing some big things, which I am too right now.

-----
In my last post, I suggested that we need to be mindful of supporting parents in our working orbits, especially right now.

And to ask our networks for support too.

Monday, at a fantastic storytelling workshop I attended, I paired with a fellow purpose-led champion. The topic for our exercise and connection moment was .... exams!

Tonight as I host , I'll be networking obviously but I know I'm with fellow parents Rebecca Wray Coaching Consultancy, Heather Hiley Financial Planning and Paul Chadwick of Prism Studios. We often talk about our kids before work.

Tomorrow, I'll be catching up with my business associate and friend Helen Nurse of Capture 1 Digital. My TEDxWarrington WhatsApp communications campaign provider and yet we met through parenting circles and sideline football chats, not networking events.

Later, I'll be attending an exciting and much-needed Women in Business event focused on wellbeing hosted by the calming, heart-led wise soul that is Zoe Holland MBE - ironically my best friend as I sat those A levels I now can't remember.

And Friday, I'll be at the regional FSB Bootcamp in Manchester. As I plan some shared travel with fellow attendees, guess what we've just been talking about first - our kids and exams.

-----
Clearly not everyone has kids, but for those around you who might and who need an ear - offer it.

Networks provide excellent support as a parent or for other parents you know.

And in those parenting or caring circles, you may also find yourself in unexpected locations to create new connections, even business opportunities, founded on commonality and shared experience.

The power of "other" circles of connection can not be underestimated.

-----
To anyone with exams in their homes or nearby right now - good luck to your kids and to you.

I'll sign off with the words of one of my prior TEDx speakers, former paediatrician Dr Jess Morgan who knows plenty about childhood memories …

"I see you, I hear you and I'm right beside you".

Do any of these apply?
You like curry. You like informal, social networking. You're near Warrington. You're free 5-7pm Wed 13 May.

Curry Club runs 3x year and is on this week if you'd like to attend. Hosted by Tricia Peters and I, it's capped at 30 local businesses to ease the networking. Not specific to professional services but we tend to get more from that sector.

Friday Feel-Good Feedback is ... discombobulation. Tricky to pick a topic this week. Lots going on in business and life and hard to beat last Friday's news.

For 6 years now, I've done this Friday post, sometimes sharing, sometimes just journalling. The intention - to end the week with a positive word of feedback, learning or gratitude.

I think today needs to be this.

My 2nd of 3 children finishes school for ever today, with A levels starting next week.

My kitchen cupboards have revision notes everywhere, the diner chalkboard wall is crammed with equations. She's working hard but there's clearly tension in the air.

I see my job now to bite my lip, be a verbal punch bag if needed, be cheery even when I'm not, offer food, smiles and empathy.

Add to this, child 1 doing med exams, child 3 being a teen boy, hubby, parents, family politics, worry about friends and some killer work projects that scare the crxp out of me, and sleep isn't coming easily. Though stuff may be out of our control, it doesn't prevent us feeling nervous and discombobulated.

So why does this relate to work, or networking even, and how the heck is it Friday positivity?

Well, I guess my points are these.

1. Everyone has their stuff going on, big, small or indifferent though you or they may deem it to be, and despite any gloss you see;

2. You may be a working parent but even if you're not, you may know some or work with some or have young people in your life. Be conscious of this time of year, that life may be stressful at home for folk and cut some slack if you can; and

3. If you're juggling life and work in any way - is that not all of us? - then use the power of your network to support you. And support back. People will make the difference to everything! Those met through networking can become your tribe.

Today, my day wil be the result of networking.

I'll start my day at a TED talk breakfast club. Ever grateful for this fortnightly brain food, company and chat offered via networking.

This afternoon, after work, I'll finish early. I'll go to a boxing session with someone met via networking. Ever grateful for the physical and mental therapy that gives me.

And to end, I'll spend time with one of the best wellbeing levellers I know - Elizabeth Edwards of Koyo Wellbeing - who ran my TEDxWarrington speaker wellbeing programme and whom I've known since 2012 when she looked after my business whilst I took a few weeks mat leave. Met via networking!

Working parent or sympathiser, keep up the great but hard work you're doing.

Let that network in to support you.

And good luck with school leaving milestones and exam fever.

Friday Feel-Good Feedback this week has to be this award 🏆👇

Award season is here and I'm proud as punch to share this news.
This week I received an award for TEDxWarrington.

2026 Community Business Runner-up North in The Small Business Growth Awards by the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) and HSBC

Why does it matter? Well ...

* Over 2800 applications were received. The photo shows how many got awards. Not from popularity, not from paying but from being scrutinised and selected by the panel.

* Our remit via TED is to deliver 1 annual TED-style event. Our choice is to add a whole host of community impact goals and sub-projects year-round. TEDx events aren’t handed to us in a neatly packaged box from TED. They’re independently created and funded.

* TEDxWarrington is not our day job, it’s voluntary work. Few people get that or why we do it. Around 300 hours of my time a year effectively running a second business. Add to that the hours of my volunteer team. That’s a LOT of commitment.

* 2025 was our biggest achievement to date. Bigger results meant bigger risks and demands on the team. Our fundraising doubled, my team expanded to almost 30, attendee numbers more than tripled, and the live event ramped up with 2 stages and 18 speakers plus performances.

* We did a lot of great things, tried new stuff, smashed some goals, AND failed at stuff too but learnt.

We all see award news all the time
Shiny trophies, big smiles, dinners, fancy black tie apparel and presentations.

Nice though that may seem, it is not about that.
It is about recognition of:

* purpose, belonging to something much bigger than ourselves and community-building;

* all those weekends sacrificed and early hour finishes;

* all the hard times and challenges, some public, some never known, when I wept on my husband's shoulder questioning what I was doing, why, and often despairing at how to solve problems. Having big community business aspirations carries the potential for huge impact. It also carries weight, stress, sleepless nights and regular fear of failure; and

* the endless hours of support and dedication from the team and stakeholders.

It’s about recognition for collective achievement.
That's why it matters.

🙏 Thanks to the FSB, HSBC, awards organisers and judges.
📢 Big shout out to those on my table whose company I enjoyed and for the insightful interview between speaker Steve Oliver and Wesley Mort.
👏 Congrats to fellow award finalists, especially my category winner Dave Morris.
🥰 And sincere gratitude to all who help me to make TEDxWarrington happen - sponsors, partners, attendees, speakers and above all my wonderful team. Many things drive me insane but you help keep me sane - we're 1 big melting pot and a superb example of community🥰

Friday Feel-Good Feedback:
April school hols continue to be an eclectic mix of big work changes & trips on varying modes of transport.

Straight off the back of planes, ubers and gondolas for a sneaky family trip to Venice, today sees the train to Leeds, bound for the Professional Speaking Association Impact conference.

Head-spinning listening and learning incoming. Continual commitment to becoming a better speaker, trainer and event host.

When the red carpet is out, you know there’s a TEDx occasion in town. And it wasn't a green carpet launch I joked about last week. Or was it?

On 1 April, I shared a red v green carpet post on the TEDxWarrington channels. I was quite surprised by how many people across platforms and in messages believed me and thought it was a cracking idea. It was in fact my last minute decision to run an April Fools post.

I was told that the fact that no one queried its authenticity has several plausible explanations.

That I don't joke enough;
That people believe what I say and think I never (white) lie; or
That people know I have creative event curation ideas.

I'll take the 3rd explanation thanks.

My green carpet joke to recognise the community impact and sustainability achievements of TEDxWarrington may have been an initial prank but revealed new realities.

1st
I assumed changing that infamous TED red branding would be an unlikely feat and I'm fiercely loyal to their brand and compliance rulebook. But apparently it's not impossible and has already been done at some TEDx events. I stood corrected by TEDx last week and pointed to examples of TEDxAmazônia and TEDxLjubljana.

2nd
Our community impact drive is real and I now plan to work on that green theming idea now I know its allowed.

We've recently been recognised for our community impact work – can’t reveal where yet but will soon.

Then last week, our RED carpet was back out of storage, hoovered and in use for our 2025 speakers, team, sponsors and partners to reunite and share their impact stories to camera in a new community engagement project I have brewing. We'll share in due course as we captured some magical reflections of how talks have had impact.

And that’s the point of all this stuff - and my green musings. Single events are great but the real value is in the purpose of what everyone in the TEDx community does this for.

Impact and legacy are the goal.

Idea sharing the vehicle.

Conversation and calls to action for behavioural change the result.

Relationship-buidling the added value.

Reunions like last week are one of the rewards of being part of our TEDxWarrington community. A chance to bring everyone together to share their connection and impact stories back on that red spot – but with green feeling.

No main event news to reveal just yet. That's a bigger work in progress once the team and I have rested a bit (and returned to our day jobs for now).

Watch out for pictures and news resulting from our reunion via the TEDxWarrington platforms.

A huge thanks to all team, speakers and sponsors for attending and to The Causeway (Warrington) and The Coffee House for becoming new Warrington partners and supporting our purpose and plans.

“You look like you work at IKEA”, says husband. “Even with the jacket?”, I ask. “IKEA management then”, he replies 😅.

Contrary to popular amusement – IKEA were not involved in Warrington Business Expo last Friday (but they're welcome next year if they'd like😉).

Lots of other businesses were there though – speaking, exhibiting, attending and sponsoring - to whom I’m hugely grateful.

---

Exhaustion hit over the weekend after back-to-back events last week. I’ve remerged today with warmth in my heart at the flood of positive posts about the Expo's relaunch.

I was asked during the podcast by Prism Studios whether I was proud of the success.

My answer – Yes, but not yet.

I admitted to being my own worst task-master, seeking perfection that can’t exist in the name of process improvement and keeping customers happy. I get so caught up in operations, pre-empting obstacles and tuning into chats and behavioural, that taking stock until later is tricky.

I always need space to reflect. Because, whilst I welcome the immediate verbal and social comments, I know the real value is the impact and deeper feedback (and it won’t all be highs).

My reflections are now taking shape, starting with these highlights and lowlights – because there are always both

---

My 5 Highlights:

1️⃣Noisy exhibitor room meant great conversations all day

2️⃣Our local MP cleared diary time to delivery our opening address

3️⃣Prism interviewed 20+ people on their podcast – offering value to speakers and listeners

4️⃣I hosted the 'Tomorrow’s Tech' panel and loved weaving the speakers and questions together. So much knowledge, so little time

5️⃣We launched Expo Bingo – our solution to stand visitation. Devised on Tuesday night and built by the exceptionally talented Chris Bain. Attendees loved collecting the stamps in return for proper conversations

My 5 Lowlights: (none our doing but our responsibility to overcome)

1️⃣Blue jacket on guaranteed delivery didn’t arrive. Phone a friend job the night before – thank you Kerry

2️⃣Starbucks' refurb opened the next day (after we'd rejected other coffee companies)

3️⃣The furniture was heavy. As we noticed footfall swarm in certain areas, Tony and I moved exhibitor stands to react quickly to this

4️⃣My lovely new branding was missing my new networking giveaway – so if you got a bag from my stand, you sadly got an emergency fairy cake instead. Sorry. I was disappointed too

5️⃣The hotel mic’s went down – tricky when you have lots of people chatting in the next hall. So I started a clapping and cheering moment to get the rooms attention. Tony and I also quietly started wielding the room dividers into place – just as well we had those IKEA-style building skills 😉

Overall – the highlights win I say. What a day!

---

For those who were there – I will follow up with you very soon and thank you for your support

For those who weren’t – I hope you will take a nosey, follow and join us next time

What’s on your networking cards this week? Here's what I'm up to with a suggestion for anyone in the Warrington, Cheshire area looking for ideas.

Monday:
Always starts with checking timescales on brought-forwards I didn’t complete.
Then a frog.
Then prospecting or new proposals.
Then I'll write a new talk on managing awkward networking moments.
Then sort my own networking cards (and other networking collateral ie marketing assets) so I have the right info and props for later this week as my own cards, banner and flyers are out of date.
A new bold project begins this afternoon.
I'll finish with team briefing docs for current event projects.

Tuesday:
Planning remaining Expo fine detail and my hosting of the ‘Tomorrow’s Tech’ panel
Then a break for a de-stress boxing and weights session.
A planning session for the TEDxWarrington reunion event and exploring next steps.
A venue visit for future events.

Wednesday:
Client by morning, associate meetings by afternoon, Professional Speaking Association NW monthly event by evening

Thursday:
I'm speaking at the Women in the Law UK IWD conference hosted at Irwin Mitchell. I’ll be the non-legal person in the room with a plan to get some networking interaction and keep the IWD conversations continuing.

Friday:
It's the Warrington Business Expo relaunch
Less an Expo, more a jam-packed full-day conference with over 14 speakers, 30 local exhibitors, networking reception, podcasting opportunities, panel, interviews and 3 workshops (a LinkedIn one and two by who are offering 2 FREE sessions onsite that day – covering AI and then Google business tools).

What does your week entail?
And what will be on your networking cards – in-person, online or via messaging – they all count!
Even just sharing some of your plans can help folk get to know what you do.

Have a great week!
