The Magic Lantern is an independent cinema showing a wide range of great films, RSC and National Theatre Live screenings, Live music and comedy. The Lantern is a fantastic 'old style' cinema and you can be assured of a great atmosphere and friendly welcome.

Open Mic is back at the Magic Lantern this week! Come for a night of live music, tasty drinks and fun with friends. Free entry! 🎤🍻🎶

Open Mic Nights take place on the 1st Friday of every month. Please email [email protected] to book a performer slot. We almost always fill all available slots so if you don't book in advance we are unlikely to be able to fit you in.

Friday Night Music Nights are free for all but we welcome donations to help us keep running these events. Suggested donation £3

Bar opens at 8.30pm and music from 9pm. It's always a great night celebrating our brilliant local music scene. See you there!

This Sunday, we bring you another great classic Western!

Directed by John Sturges and widely regarded as one of the greatest films in the Western genre, The Magnificent Seven follows a group of seven gunfighters hired to protect a small Mexican village from marauding bandits led by the ruthless Calvera.

Based on Akira Kurosawa’s masterpiece The Seven Samurai, it was released in October 1960 and features an ensemble cast including Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen, Horst Buchholz, Charles Bronson, Robert Vaughn, Brad Dexter, James Coburn and Eli Wallach.

The film went on to spawn three sequels, a television series and a 2016 remake.

This screening is part of our 125 Season – a year-long celebration of classic films to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the first film being shown in Tywyn.

Reminder: The Christophers is back from a final time at The Lantern, and it's a discounted screening too!

If you are over the golden age of 60, you can see the film for just £5. The ticket includes tea or filter coffee! ☺️

Please note that this screening is open to all, but standard ticket prices apply to those under 60.

Important: We are considering whether to continue with our Discounted Screenings. They often have very small audiences. The people who do attend these screenings regularly get so much out of them that we are very reluctant to stop them, but we just can’t afford to open for a handful of people.

We are going to have one last big push to raise awareness this month, and if you can help us spread the word, that would be amazing!

A bit of a heads-up! Effi o Blaenau is back at the Lantern this month and, excluding the summer blockbusters, this film has been our most popular so far in 2026!

We’re incredibly proud of the success this Welsh independent film has achieved, both with critics and at the box office, and we’re thrilled to bring it back for three extra screenings. If you haven’t had a chance to see it, now is the time!

Many of our staff members have seen it by now, and we all agree that it’s a fantastic film. As our film-goer Mat describes it, “It’s raw and authentic like you’ll rarely see on the big screen, and Leisa Gwenllian’s performance is one of the best things you’ll see this year.”

Sara and Rowan added:
"The film takes you on a roller coaster of emotions and you never know quite where it is going so we don’t want to say much about the plot. Trust us though – it is a captivating, moving and very honest, believable film."

Based on Gary Owen’s much-lauded and widely performed monodrama Iphigenia in Splott, Effi o Blaenau is director Marc Evans’ cinematic adaptation, set against the sweeping landscapes of North Wales.

Reminder: Tuesday night is Quiz Night at the Magic Lantern, as always hosted by the brilliant Ian & Claire! ✍️🍻

Doors open at 8.30pm, and the quiz starts at 9pm. The cost is £1 per player, payable in cash on the night.

Everyone is welcome — we suggest arriving early to get a table, as these nights are usually very popular and we often have to spread out into the main hall!

Our Discounted Screenings resume this week, but we need your help — please read this post!

We are considering whether to continue with them. Our Magic Mondays, Youth Screens, Golden Agers and Little Lanterneers often have very small audiences. The people who do attend these screenings regularly get so much out of them that we are very reluctant to stop them, but we just can’t afford to open for a handful of people.

We are going to have one last big push to raise awareness this month, and if you can help us spread the word, that would be amazing!

Any feedback would also be much appreciated, such as if you find the times inconvenient or have any other reasons why you don’t attend. Thank you!

Note: This week, there are only two, but from next week, Magic Mondays and Young Adults will be back, making a total of four discounted screenings per week.

Last chance to see The Road of Excess, tomorrow (Tue 1 Sep) at 6pm!

The film focuses on Welshmen Mathew Pritchard and how, since the days of Dirty Sanchez (a cult British stunt and prank TV series in the same vein as Jackass), he has found redemption through sport and fitness, swapping “one addiction for another”.

The story kicks off as Mathew prepares to row across the Atlantic in search of meaning, but what is driving him to do this and will isolation at sea for seven weeks be the panacea he’s looking for?

We had a very successful first sceeening last week and our audience really liked it. This documentary also comes highly recommended by our Annie, who found it incredibly moving, riveting and enlightening!

We had a fantastic summer, and we would like to thank everyone — locals and visitors alike — for coming to the Magic Lantern and supporting us! It was great to see so many full screenings and to know how many of you enjoyed the films! 💜🎞

We’ll soon be transitioning back to our normal screening times, but don’t worry — there are still plenty of films to see this week, with a few new entries and some popular favourites making a comeback! And we have more plans for September, including some special screenings for our 125 season, so stay tuned! 😊
