A busy weekend in the shop got me thinking, once again, about how complex people are.
Benjamin Franklin famously said that nothing is certain except death and taxes. I think he missed something.
Every person we meet carries a world inside them. Hope, fear, grief, joy, memories, love, loss, dreams and doubts. Most of it remains invisible unless they choose to share it.
One of the things I love most about my work is that people often do share it.
A bridal appointment isn’t really shopping. It’s a life transition. It’s family history, relationships, excitement, nerves, hope vulnerability. People tell their stories. They open up. They trust you with pieces of themselves.
It’s a privilege.
The older I get, the more certain I become of one thing: we have no idea what another person is carrying, nor what they might bring into our lives if we take the time to listen.
Sorry Ben, your quote needs a little artistry. 😉
