Cabaret Voltaire. Cultural events: mostly music, but sometimes poetry and other things Welcome! Willkommen! Bienvenue! By day we paint pictures, teach children and build walls.

But by night our records jostle uncontrollably for attention, knowing that soon they will be spinning in a tent, forest or club. Arms flaying and hips swaying; bodies sweaty, dancefloor heavy. Fionn Regan returns to the South West in celebration of Berlin, Berlin , a new record. He’ll perform in the beautiful church St Michael’s Mount Dinham, in Exeter.

His debut album The End of History was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize.

Fionn’s song “Dogwood Blossom” drew new audiences when it found kindred spirits in two TV shows, romantic lockdown hit Normal People and Shane Meadows’s This Is England 86. Oscar-winning actor Cillian Murphy featured in the video for 2017’s “The Meeting Of The Waters”.

231 years ago today Coleridge married Sara Fricker in St Mary Redcliffe church, part of the beautiful building’s association with poetry that also includes Thomas Chatterton and Robert Southey.

So last night it was a joy when Simon Armitage, Karen Solie, and Rachel Bower read there to mark National Poetry Day, which took place earlier in the week. Thank you to them.

If you weren’t there, Simon’s South West sojourn is this month, with events in Totnes, Torrington, and Bodmin. Totnes is sold out, but there are a few tickets left for the others.

There’s a Grace Petrie concert this month in Bodmin in the beautiful church there. Grace’s politically charged songwriting brings her into a wonderful heritage of folk protest songs. Indeed, she’s often been compared to Billy Bragg, one of her greatest champions too.

A Tamarind Tree appreciation post!

You might have noticed on the Totnes gig posters that I thank Tamarind Tree for feeding our musicians. For the last few years lovely Nikheel and his team have prepared delicious Indian street food for our performers. It’s a real highlight for tired musicians on the road to get a properly cooked meal after a long journey. I love popping in there to pick it up as there is always a friendly face and nice people in the restaurant, so I know there will be some good chats.

Thank you Nikheel for supporting grassroots music.

It’s just up the road from the Barrel House and Civic Hall, so I reckon you should go in there and see what I’m blabbing on about.

Violin, piano, beats, electronics all jostling for attention - that was Yann Tiersen in Totnes. It made me think about what it is to be an artist, it made me feel wriggly.
