Wartime often forces inventors to come up with solutions to horrific problems very quickly.

During the wet winter of 1914, thousands of British soldiers in the trenches suffered from trench foot due to standing in cold, muddy water for days.

To combat this, the British military introduced the "Mosley Trench Boot", which used oil-treated leather and extra waterproofing layers to keep the feet dry.

Soldiers were also ordered to change their socks twice a day and rub whale oil onto their feet to keep moisture out.

When you walk through our recreated WWI trenches at the show, you will see exactly what life was like for the soldiers who lived through these conditions.

Have you ever been told that eating your carrots will help you see in the dark?

That famous piece of advice actually started as a highly successful wartime propaganda campaign.

In 1940, the Royal Air Force began using a brand-new, secret airborne radar technology to spot enemy bombers at night.

To keep this technology a total secret from the enemy, the Ministry of Information told the public that the pilots' incredible night success was simply down to eating lots of carrots.

The story was so convincing that even British citizens began eating more carrots to help them navigate during nighttime blackouts.

History still has plenty of secrets that haven't been solved.

One of the strangest is the Roman dodecahedron - a small, hollow bronze object with 12 flat faces and holes of varying sizes.

Some think they were used for surveying, others believe they were knitting tools or even religious objects.

When you visit our ancient history camps this July, you can see the gear used by Roman legionaries and civilians first hand.

Perhaps you will have your own theory on how these curious objects were used!
