When you step back and look at the skills our children need in the modern world versus what many are learning in our school curriculum there are definitely areas that need enrichment.
The World Economic Forum’s latest jobs report lists creative thinking as one of the top skills employers want, and one of the fastest growing. Having ideas is one thing. Being able to bring ideas to life and explain them to someone else is what really counts.
That’s what The Big Idea day in half term is about. It’s a little bit of art, a little bit of idea generation mixed with some maths and business skills. And honestly, it’s a lot of fun. Not intimidating just encouraging and supportive.

We first met Nikki over four years ago, when she attended one of our Mummy & Me workshops with her daughter, Ella. She loved what we did so much that she is now part of our studio team.

Nikki is living with secondary breast cancer and is passionate about creating support, connection and community for families going through the same experience. She receives support herself from Future Dreams Charity, a breast cancer charity that believes no one should face breast cancer alone.

We’re so excited to be taking our Mummy & Me Workshop to Future Dreams House this October half term, especially for a group of Secondary Breast Cancer Mummies and their children. 💕

If you know a mum and child who might benefit from spending some special time together in a supportive and welcoming space, we still have a few spaces available.

Back to school is coming and I keep thinking about how creativity can get lost once routine kicks back in.

So if it’s useful here’s some ideas to enjoy together over the last few days of the holidays. Nothing complicated, nothing expensive just small ways to keep that spark going before the structure takes over.

We’re whizzing through the summer holidays so here’s a little idea of a creative activity you could do at home.

You’ll need special ‘colour bleeding tissue paper’ which you can find on Amazon or in art shops and a nice substantial watercolour paper to absorb the water.

Cut the tissue into small pieces - either strips or squares work nicely.
Make the paper wet with your brush.
Add a piece of tissue and brush water over the top.

The tissue is sandwiched between the water and the wet paper. The ink will bleed and blend into interesting soft shapes.

Filling the page is so mindful and immersive. It’s the perfect way to create without challenge or pressure and a lovely shared activity.

When you have covered all the white spaces and it’s dry, carefully remove the tissue paper.
We love this bit! Lots of oohs and aaahs!

See how the colour is left behind in abstract shapes. If it’s really dry you can blow the tissue off!

Now what to do with your page of colour?
Covering a sketch book, a photo book or a diary makes them totally unique.

Or snip it into simple shapes for a really impactful abstract artwork (great for cards and bookmarks too)

Or this is a beautiful floral collage we made once in one of our Mummy and me workshops - it’s more tricky to do this so perhaps something to make together.

Whatever you do we hope you have fun!

Art should always be accessible and enjoyable and if you have a quiet afternoon, young or old, you can’t go wrong with this tissue paper artwork ✂️💛

A little shout out for our team… honestly when Suzie and I reflect on the last 12 years of running our business we both agree that one of the most enjoyable parts of the job (other than working with the children) is the sense of camaraderie with our team. We trust them, are inspired by them and get a great deal of confidence knowing we’re all in it together.
These pics are just the summer camps crew but there’s 20 of us who work in the business, split across different specializations, and we appreciate them all just as much.
Feeling very lucky as I look forward to a little summer break that these guys will steer a calm and steady path towards the new term 🤩
