Did you know confetti has been thrown at weddings for thousands of years? It started as grain and rice, thrown to wish the couple fertility and good luck. Paper confetti only came along in the late 1800s when it became cheap enough to mass produce.
The word itself comes from the Italian word for sugared almonds, which were traditionally thrown at celebrations in Italy. So yes, people used to lob sweets at newlyweds.
These days most UK venues have strict rules about what you can and can’t throw. Biodegradable only is pretty standard now, think dried petals, leaves, and natural paper. Groundskeepers eventually won that battle.
And if you want it to look as good in photos as it does in your head? Everyone needs to throw at the same time, from close range, and you need a lot of it. Your photographer will thank you.

Oxfordshire Planner of the Year 2026. Let’s go….

Last year, winning Hitched Buckinghamshire Planner of the Year felt surreal. This year, I thought - why not go for Oxfordshire too? So many of my couples’ weddings happen there, and they left reviews that made me believe I had a shot.
Turns out, I did.
