Following last year's health scare and subsequent major surgery,
I have reluctantly made the decision to retire with effect from the end of May 2022

The telephone line will shortly stop working, however I will keep
the business email address should anyone need to contact me.

I have enjoyed the last 34 years immensely and have made many friends through our business. I do hope that those friendships will continue and I thank you all for your loyalty, love and support since 1988.

I have been asked whether I have retired yet? Absolutely not!!! I have however slowed down due to having a heart attack the day before lockdown restrictions eased. This was followed by a quadruple heart bypass and a period of convalescence. My timing was excellent, there was no Covid 19 in Derriford and my recovery has been excellent. Thank you our fabulous NHS!

I am contactable by phone, email, Messenger or text and although not always in a position to answer in person at the time, will respond quickly to any communication.

Our normal hours are 10am to 5.00pm Monday to Friday but I remain flexible for any urgent requirement.

I thank my wonderful customers and friends for all their support throughout this challenging time and assure them all that I am back to my normal bubbly self once more and look forward to helping them for several more years to come. 👍🥰👍

The end of the second lockdown in sight, Easter coming up, hospitality and pubs are starting to trade once again AND the sun is shining! What's not to like?

Positivity is in the air and old faces and new customers are once more getting in touch. It has been a difficult and worrying time for everyone, so the light at the end of the tunnel is a very welcome sight.

Although I'm not always available to answer the phone in person, one the joys of being a small business means that I may be running machinery, delivering or outside cleaning the windows etc., it does not mean that I'm not around. So please do please leave messages or email me, [email protected] and I will respond to you very quickly once I am free.

HAPPY EASTER EVERYONE!

31/12/2020

We wish all our customers and friends a happy and Covid free New Year. A huge thank you to all those who have supported and encouraged us through this last year.

10/12/2020

December has arrived, and with it an increase in orders for which we say a huge thank you. It is still very quiet, but at least now we can see a distant light at the end of the tunnel. We have also just completed another wedding stationery order. Just 20 Orders of Service for a much diminished wedding on Saturday. Congratulations to the Bride and Groom, and we wish you happiness for your future lives together. Just two weddings for us in 2020. My own niece among the thousands that have been cancelled this year. 2021 looks as though it will be another challenge, but hopefully we will see much a reduced Covid 19 effect as the year progresses, and we pull together in order to beat it. For now we wish all our customers and friends a very happy, though restricted Christmas and send our good wishes and hopes for a better New Year.

A month has passed since we started to welcome customers back and we have been delighted to have been able to help you all once again and to rekindle old friendships.

Should you need to see us, you are welcome, but please make an appointment first. We may not always be able to answer a phone call, but please leave a message and we will get back to you. You can also email [email protected].

When you visit, please ring the bell on the gate to announce your presence and we will greet you. Hand sanitiser is available as you enter the office, and distancing measures are in place. Please remember to bring your mask!

Free delivery, if required remains unchanged for local customers.

Our thoughts are with all local businesses who are struggling to make ends meet and are fearful of the future. Trading times have changed for many, and those who rely on footfall are having to cope with a massive reduction of turnover and the extra cost of PPE. Please support them where you can, especially those who are in the hospitality and catering trade who have been particularly effected at this time. Together we can beat this!

01/07/2020

We are delighted to be able to open for business again from Monday 6th July 2020.
However, in order to maintain distancing the following measures will be in place.

Visitors are now welcome by appointment only please. Please ring us on 01822 611444, or email guy(at)otterypress(dot)co(dot)uk.

If I am unable to answer the phone when you call, please leave a message and I will return your call.

There is a doorbell on left of the main gate. Please use this to announce your presence and I will greet you. Our dogs may be loose, so please wait for me before entering.

If you do have to enter the office, There will be a contactless hand sanitiser dispenser on the wall inside the door, containing 80% Alcohol Hand Sanitiser Liquid as recommended for viral control.

In view of the small size of our office, please do not proceed beyond the front desk. This area is clearly marked.

You do not have to visit us. Orders can be placed via email, Messenger or telephone. Local deliveries remain free, but there may be a small charge outside a five mile radius, if a special trip is required.

We look forward to welcoming our customers new and old back. Stay healthy everyone.

29/04/2020

Please be aware that we will not be open to visitors due to the government's Covid 19 restrictions.
We will be monitoring the answerphone throughout, so if the office is unmanned please phone and leave a message after the tone and we will return your call.
We wish you and your family good health though these difficult times

IMPORTANT, PLEASE READ

It is with great sadness that I have decided to retire from printing "in house" from the end of February 2019. This decision has been forced upon me by the state of the small-print and paper trade market in general and also the lack of choice that now exists for sourcing materials for the specialist areas of our business that I have always enjoyed.

2018 brought with it a world-wide shortage of paper-pulp for paper making, due in part by manufacturers starting to move away from plastics to paper based products. This in turn has led to an unprecedented series of paper price increases and has caused Plymouth's last remaining paper merchant to stop stocking print sizes and concentrate on other areas of their business instead.

The last straw was the announcement by the manufacturer of our digital press, that they would no longer be able to offer us the reliable service they had in the past, because parts and consumables would now be stocked elsewhere in Europe instead of the UK.

I have enjoyed the last 30 years of in-house production immensely and have made many friends through the business. There have been highs and lows. The loss of my wife to cancer in 2013 after twelve month heart-breaking illness, made me realise the fragility of life. Turning 60 and meeting Amanda and re-marrying in 2017 made me all the more determined to have more family time and actually take breaks.

I am in no way ready to retire quite yet, so together with my business associates and friends in the trade, I intend where possible to continue to service many of our customers. Print-finishing will continue to be done on the premises. Those that I can help in this way will continue to enjoy the same competitive service that I have always given them in the past. The only noticeable difference will be that I will no longer be printing in-house on the premises.

The Ottery Press telephone number will remain the same as will the email address. If I don't answer the phone personally, please do leave a message and I will return your call and give you advice or help as needed.

I do hope that friendships will continue and I thank you all for your loyalty, love and support since 1988. Guy

With no end in sight for the hot weather, I am reminded of the summer of 88 when we built our workshop. There was a hosepipe ban in place and cement had to be mixed using water from a butt.

2018 has brought more paper price rises than ever before, with at least one increase every two months and more to come. This is mainly being caused by the world turning against plastic when the only viable solution is paper based. MacDonald's just this week, announced that they are ditching plastic straws in favour of paper ones. There simply is not enough paper pulp being produced to satisfy demand. To make matters worse many paper mills have also closed in recent years, with over 1,000 closing in China alone because environmental production concerns. The mills need pulp to survive, we are already recycling record quantities of paper in order to make brands that were once made from "virgin pulp". So, more price rises across the industry seem inevitable, but hopefully the increased demand may also lead to a revival for the British paper industry as we look to the future.
