As we get so many questions about banana plants, here are some information:
Musa basjoo, also known as the hardy banana, is a species of banana plant that can be grown in the UK with some care. Here are some tips for growing Musa basjoo in the UK:
Choosing the right location: Musa basjoo needs a sheltered location with full sun or partial shade. It is best to plant it against a south-facing wall or in a sheltered courtyard.
Soil: Musa basjoo grows best in well-drained soil that is rich in organic matter. If the soil is heavy or clayey, add sand or grit to improve drainage.
Planting: Plant Musa basjoo in the spring, once the risk of frost has passed. Dig a hole that is twice the size of the root ball and add compost or well-rotted manure to the soil. Plant the banana plant so that the top of the root ball is level with the soil surface.
Watering: Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. Water the plant deeply once or twice a week, depending on the weather conditions.
Mulching: Mulch around the base of the plant with organic matter, such as bark chips or compost, to help retain moisture and suppress weeds.
Fertilizing: Feed the plant with a balanced fertilizer every two to three weeks during the growing season.
Winter protection: In winter, protect the plant by wrapping it in horticultural fleece or straw. Cut back the leaves to about 30cm above the ground and cover the base of the plant with a thick layer of mulch.
With proper care, Musa basjoo can grow up to 5 meters tall and survive UK winters, even if the leaves die back. It may take a few years for the plant to produce fruit, but the large, tropical foliage is an attractive feature in any garden.
