Peter Stevenson tells the folk tales of the Welsh coast and sea with crankies, moving illustrated scrolls turned by handles in a large wooden box, movies from the days before electricity and cinema. Hear tales of drunken mermaids, swan girls, the Green Man of No One's Land, Siani Chickens who lived on the beach, old Beti's love potions, Skomer Oddy the giant, Shemi the Fibber of Fishguard, the war on the little mountain, and Henry Box Brown who escaped slavery and brought crankies to the UK. Join Peter on a journey that blends past and present and explores the social and environmental change that is carved into the Welsh coastline.

What's a Crankie I hear you ask? A Crankie is a large wooden box like a big picture frame that contains a long illustrated scroll which is turned by a handle to create a moving panorama to illustrate the story.

Peter's Swan Girl Crankie, as well as some pictures of him using them in his performances, are shown below to give you an idea of what to expect.

These are beautiful works of art and Peter is among the very best to produce them. He has included his Crankies in exhibitions around the world outside storytelling so you'll be getting an art exhibition as well as a wonderful storytelling show!

📢 Next Event 😁 Peter Stevenson tells the folk tales of the Welsh coast and sea with crankies, moving illustrated scrolls turned by handles in a large wooden box, movies from the days before electricity and cinema. Join Peter on a journey that blends past and present and explores the social and environmental change that is carved into the Welsh coastline. Stories will be chosen from his two new books, Welsh Folk Tales of Coast and Sea, and Illustrated Welsh Folk Tales for Young and Old. We will also enjoy a performance from Stroud based storyteller Ashley Howard.
