We've been truly spoilt at Hawkwood this summer with some beautiful musical moments taking place!

At the end of July we hosted a unique concert from Hawkwood Fellow Matthew Barley (cello) and artists in residence Hanna Rynnänen (kantele), Dawda Jobarteh (kora), and Adriano Adewale (berimbau/percussion). They met as a group for the first time at Hawkwood and the concert was their inaugural performance in front of an audience. With new compositions, improvisations, and arrangements of dances and lullabies from across the globe, it was a truly special evening, which ended with a very well-deserved standing ovation!

Last week, our house, halls and corridors resonated to the sounds of the Renaissance as we hosted Brighton Early Music Festival’s Emerging Artists. Returning to Hawkwood for their second year, co-Artistic Directors Olwen Foulkes and Hannah Ely accompanied fourteen young musicians and singers on a three day residency of workshops and masterclasses. The residency culminated in a sharing for an invited audience where guests were treated to a wonderful performance featuring ensembles of harpsichord, viol da gamba, violin, lute, Baroque flutes, and vocals! The BREMF scheme is one of the pre-eminent mentoring and development programmes for emerging professional early music performers in the UK.

Our summer of music concludes with Craig Ogden's Classical Guitar Concert on Friday 28th August at 7:30pm. This lively, summer evening's concert will be an intimate and entertaining journey through the guitar repertoire, combining brilliance with warmth. Last week we hosted our first gathering of (some of!) our Hawkwood Fellows. This was an opportunity to share ideas and actions across so many different fields and communities.

Through their collective connection to Hawkwood, new collaborations and relationships were forged over an inspiring evening of rich conversations and insights.

Following this bringing together of our Hawkwood Fellows, we are able to clarify the new shape of this programme and how it might create positive social change. Keep an eye out as we will be continuing to share more about our amazing Fellows and their work at Hawkwood and in the wider world.
