A sound clash is deeply rooted in Jamaican sound system culture, where rival sound systems face off to showcase their skills in music selection, DJing, and crowd engagement. Originating in the 1950s, these clashes are a vibrant expression of reggae, dancehall, and other Caribbean music genres, with each sound system vying to outdo the others through superior sound quality, exclusive dubplates (custom recordings), and charismatic mic skills. The audience plays a crucial role in determining the winner by their reactions, making sound clashes a dynamic and interactive celebration of music and community.
Resident Roots Stroud pays homage to these legendary gatherings by bringing the Sound Clash vibe to Stroud's Landsdown Hall this Saturday 25th April. Resident Roots are a Stroud based collective, comprising event organisers, DJs and soundsysystem builders; Global Beats ( JagP), Valley Steppas (Beth &George) Rigatoni ( Rubin) & Widebeam ( Joe).
Through a shared love and appreciation of Jamaican and UK sound system culture, Resident Roots organise reggae events approx three or four times a year. The sound clash events seek to showcase the depth and diversity of reggae- including roots, dub and steppas music which can only truly be experienced through a sound system dance. Residents Roots events embrace the unifying power of reggae music - a gift the country of Jamaica has given to the world. Resident Roots seeks to offer a community space where we can celebrate this great music, appreciate sound system culture in all its glory, whilst showcasing home grown Stroud talent. The sound systems are all hand-built in Stroud and all DJs are all from Stroud.
Tickets for the event are Β£10 and can be purchased here .
