Wherever F went, love laughter and joy followed, so it was no wonder that the chapel was absolutely full to capacity. There were lots of tears during the ceremony but so much laughter too, remembering F’s capacity for joy. Her daughter did a reading and was incredible too. When I got home I had the most wonderful message simply saying…’we couldn’t have chosen anyone better for mum’s funeral, Debs, you went above and beyond to make sure it was perfect. You made the service, funny, personal and engaging and absolutely summed mum up to a tee. Mum would have loved it too’!! Thanks Debs. The S family.

He was clearly very much admired and respected. One of his friends read an ‘Ode’ she’d written for him years ago but it was absolutely fantastic and summed B up perfectly.
A life well lived is a precious gift regardless of how short or long that life is. You, as their loved ones want their funeral or memorial to reflect who they truly were. It’s my privilege to support you to do just that. Together we will do your loved one justice on their final goodbye

Whilst they didn’t have children, they do have a large loving family who all turned up dressed in bright colours to celebrate R’s wonderful personality. It was such a joy to see it. There were plenty of tears but so much laughter too as R was such a gregarious character. When T got up to remember R, there was not a dry eye in the chapel. He spoke to eloquently about how R had been the love of his life for his whole life. There was no doubt how much R was loved and valued, by not only T but by her entire family. What a wonderful send off it was.

Her presence is very much missed. F’s two granddaughters did readings for the funeral as part of the service, and they were both….quite simply… wonderful. So young and yet so eloquent. I’m not sure I’ve ever heard someone who was just 8 years old speak so fluently and beautifully about how much they’ll miss their grandma. It was amazing. When I returned home, I had a wonderful message from the family saying how personal the service was. There was a fair bit of humour included, as F was a rather comical character, and they’d loved that about my service. What a wonderful message to receive.

‘Just to say thank you Debs again for the wonderful service you conducted for C’s funeral. It was everything that we could have hoped for and more. The service was so personal and you definitely captured the essence of the wonderful man C was.’

I’ve just received this lovely thank you message from C’s family. I officiated at his funeral a couple of weeks ago. It was clear from meeting the family how loved and valued he was. He was such a wonderful gentleman who will be greatly missed. His daughter read the most incredible poem she’d written for him which was simply called ‘dad you’re my hero’ – it was just amazing to hear that in the chapel.

I’ve just met one of my lovely wedding couples again, A&C who are getting married at the rather fabulous Gopsall Hall Farm. We met at the venue so I could get a feel for the vibe they’re looking for. They’re such an unassuming couple who’ve been together for nearly a decade and they know exactly what they want which is great. The day will be a festival vibe, and I have to say that Gopsall Hall Farm is just spot on for that. It’s nestled in the Leicestershire countryside and it is… to be blunt… spectacular as a venue. A&C have hired the entire venue which includes teepees, glamping pods, other fields for camper vans and tents – the whole venue will be their amazing wedding festival. It’s rustic in style and has so much potential and character. It’s going to be amazing, I can’t wait to start working on their script for the big day itself.

I’ve just been lucky enough to carry out a vow renewal for a wonderful couple S&D. Married for 20 years, and they’ve been through some challenging times of late. They wanted to stand up in front of their loved ones and tell them and the world that they ‘still do’!. My goodness…… they did just that and more. There was not a dry eye in the house (or garden should I say) when they both read their vows, which were simply incredible and so personal. Their children did a reading which was wonderful and very emotional. Everyone at the ceremony was also included in my Tree of Love & Life unity ritual and they all became incredibly loud during that – which was just fabulous. S&D – here’s to another happy 20 years – let me know if you want another renewal in another 20 years! I’m up for it!!

I’ve recently conducted a funeral for a wonderful gentleman, D. His family was small, but the chapel was almost full on the day itself which I don’t think his wife and son expected. They knew he was loved, they loved him with all their hearts of course, but I don’t think they quite understood how other people felt about him too. It was a funeral full of warmth, love and memories. His son had written a wonderful tribute to D, very heartfelt and included a poem at the end about their joint love of fishing. It was comical and warm and was a perfect tribute to his lovely dad. The family didn’t want hymns or prayers as D wasn’t religious, but another family friend did a reading too that just summed up D’s unique character and presence. The family loved the service and sent me a wonderful message afterwards. It was a pleasure to work with them and do justice to their loved one.

Being a celebrant at a wedding is quite a task-writing love stories, vows, ring exchanges, poetry, unity rituals and anything else the happy couple want me to build in for them. It takes a while to craft things and make them just right. The couple, of course, have full veto on every single sentence or line that I write – if they don’t think it’s right, we change or remove it – it simply must be perfect for them. It’s vital I understand just how unique they are as a couple – that enables me to write a beautiful, warm and funny script for them. It’s a joyous process though end to end, from the very first contact or phone call, through to the first meet, then pulling elements together so the couple can be sure I am creating something especially for them. Then there’s the big day itself, watching the couple and their loved ones light up during the ceremony is amazing. If I’ve done my job well, there is pure magic in the air! Make your wedding as unique as you are by hiring an independent celebrant.
