“Whitebottom Witch”
Since the 1820s, Etherow Country Park - originally part of the "Andrews Estate" - has been enjoyed by millions of dog walkers, ramblers and anglers, blissfully unaware of the grim history, that lies just meters behind the weir, at Whitebottom Farm.
"Frightbottom Farm" - as it's known to the locals - has been a working farm since 1690. In 1705, legend has it that the youngest daughter of the Whitebottom family was accused of performing witchcraft and hanged for her crimes. It is believed her body was buried just outside of the grounds of the farm.
In 1843, one Mr George Andrews’ mine workers unknowingly dug up the remains of the "Whitebottom Witch" - disturbing her eternal slumber.
