As we move through May and the sunshine begins to arrive, we are all looking forward to long summer days filled with beautiful flowers.

As much as we love bringing the garden indoors for our clients, there is something very special about flowers on an outdoor table — gorgeous seasonal flowers, delicious food and wonderful company, all enjoyed surrounded by the garden itself.

For those planning summer celebrations at home or in the garden, flowers can completely transform the atmosphere of a table and make even the simplest gathering feel incredibly special.

A small gesture can carry a great deal of feeling.

Flowers have long been given to mark moments of care, gratitude, sympathy and celebration. There is something immediate about them — their scent, colour and natural movement — that speaks in a way words sometimes cannot.

Perhaps that is why the tradition has endured for centuries. A thoughtful bouquet placed in someone’s hands has a quiet but powerful way of saying I am thinking of you.

In moments of farewell, flowers can offer a quiet way to express love, remembrance and gratitude for a life well lived.

Here at Featherstone Flowers many of the stems we use in our funeral arrangements are grown slowly in our own field, tended throughout the seasons before being gathered and arranged with great care. Their natural shapes, scent and softness feel fitting for such personal moments.

Our approach is always thoughtful and gentle, creating designs that honour the person being remembered while bringing a sense of calm and comfort to family and friends during a difficult time.

If we can help you at such a time, you can find further information on our website via the link in our bio.

One of the urn arrangements we created for A & R’s wedding last spring.

Positioned beside the couple as they exchanged their vows in the church, it brought together peach and apricot roses with airy seasonal flowers and fresh foliage. Our field-to-design approach means we work with the very best flowers available at that moment, so every arrangement — and every wedding — is entirely unique.

We are now fully booked for spring and summer weddings this year, but have some availability for autumn and are taking enquiries for 2027. If you would like to discuss flowers for your wedding, please enquire via the weddings page on our website.

Many of the most memorable weddings take place in beautiful private gardens, where the landscape itself becomes part of the setting.

For this ceremony we created an abundant floral arch to frame the couple as they exchanged their vows beneath a sailcloth tent, amongst their closest family and friends. All set under a magnificent horse chestnut tree beside a wildflower meadow running down through the river valley.

Towering foxgloves, alliums and orlaya were arranged at the base of the arch, linking the ceremony flowers to the surrounding garden, where the borders were filled with alliums at that time of year. Being May, we were also able to include roses, peonies and sweet peas, filling the tent with scent.

When designing for a garden setting, we always begin by looking carefully at what is already growing there, often working with the head gardener or gardening team so the flowers we bring in echo the colours, textures and planting already present in the landscape.

Of course, we couldn’t agree more with Mary Berry, who said in Sunday’s Telegraph, “Picking flowers is the best natural health cure there is".

When we fill bucket after bucket with glorious flowers there are always squeals of delight. It’s not something you ever become immune to (thankfully), but a real joy day after day. No two harvests are ever the same; each morning brings something new to cut — an old friend returning after a year, or perhaps a new acquaintance we’re only just getting to know but which holds a great deal of promise.

It won’t be long now until the field is bursting with flowers and we can throw open the gates for our Guided Pick Your Own sessions. If you head to our website you’ll find our PYO vouchers available at a special rate, giving you and one other adult entry and a bucket of flowers for £35 (usually £45).

They make a thoughtful gift for someone who loves flowers, particularly with Mother’s Day this weekend.

Mother’s Day is just around the corner and the barn is beginning to fill with spring flowers.

We have been out today harvesting from the field; narcissi, daffodils and anemones, as well as pretty foliage such as spirea and hazel. Alongside these, we have a selection of beautiful stems arriving through the week, from our trusted growers, meaning the barn studio is full of colour as we prepare bouquets for the weekend.

To read more about the flowers available at this time of year we've written about these in our latest journal post:
https://www.featherstoneflowers.co.uk/post/seasonal-flowers-in-march-what-s-flowering-now-at-featherstone-flowers

We have a small collection of Mother’s Day bouquets available, in a range of spring colours including soft pastels, gathered pinks and peaches and cream.

Delivery is available on any day, including Sunday, or you are very welcome to collect from the barn. Our free delivery area now covers the whole of the SO20 postcode.

If you would like to send flowers this weekend, orders can be placed through the website.

Please note flowers will vary as each bouquet we make is unique.

Happy International Women’s Day.

Although, to be fair, most days at Featherstone’s feel a little like Women’s Day! We are incredibly lucky to have such a brilliant team here — talented, hardworking and passionate about what they do.

Featherstone’s began with just Jess and me, but over the years it has grown into something much bigger thanks to the amazing group of women who make up the team today. From growing in the field, to designing flowers in the barn, to supporting everything that happens behind the scenes, their skill, determination and good humour are a huge part of what makes Featherstone Flowers what it is.

Today we are celebrating the team. Thank you all! X
