South Moor Golf Club

South Moor Golf Club South Moor was designed by world famous architect Dr Alister MacKenzie, who also designed Augusta National, Cypress Point and Royal Melbourne.
(279)

This heathland course is a breathtaking combination of great views, undulating fairways and protected greens. In golf, the name of Dr. Alistair MacKenzie will forever be synonymous with the course that hosts the U.S masters. Though Augusta national is undoubtedly MacKenzie's masterpiece, it is widely accepted that his place in history as a legendary architect, was already assured. MacKenzie was ha

rdly a prolific designer like a James Braid but his courses are typical of his vision, none more so than South Moor. Here, he has designed a course that winds between gorse, heather and bracken in a superb moorland layout. The large, slopey greens are a typical MacKenzie trait, guaranteeing that even when hit in regulation, the player will have to work hard with his putter to match par, harder still to make birdie. At 6,2723 yards from the back tees, the course is hardly long by today's standards but with a premium on accuracy it would be foolish to try to overpower the course with the driver, particularly with out of bounds a factor on eleven holes. The course starts gently enough and though the first seven holes are no pushover it is widely accepted that barring the long par 4 fourth, they present the course's best birdie opportunities. It is from the eighth tee onwards that one really begins to appreciate the course's design. The way MacKenzie uses the contours of the land can at times, from the tee, make the fairways look pencil thin. And yet, look back from the fairway and one wonders how anyone could miss such a generous target. No more is this evident than on the par 4 thirteenth. There is out of bounds to the right as well as heather, gorse and a stream on both sides and when played into the wind this tee shot is not for the faint of heart. If safely negotiated the player is rewarded with a short to mid iron to a huge green which presents a generous target. It's difficult to pick the course's signature hole; it really could be any of the final eleven. Perhaps the par 3 fourteenth, almost 200 yards from the medal tees it plays much longer into the prevailing wind. As well as the three bunkers, the green is protected by a stream that wanders, hidden in a swale, just in front of the target. It is arguable though, whether protection is required, as a great shot to this fast green, which slopes sharply from back to front, far from guarantees par. However, for sheer simplicity, MacKenzie's design is best summed up on the very next hole. At 360 yards this par 4 is not long and plays much shorter with the prevailing wind behind. A long iron or fairway wood down the left hand side of the fairway will leave a pitch to a generous green which, again, slopes heavily from back to front. The dilemma for the golfer is, the further left he aims his tee shot the nearer he will be to the stream which runs the length of the fairway. Further right and he'll be left with a much more difficult approach, having to thread the ball between the bunkers at the front and leave a very fast putt back down the green. Perhaps the greatest testimony to MacKenzie's design is that, like all great courses, it continues to ask questions coming down the stretch. If you can protect a good score you can also improve it. It can be a tough test; the heather in full bloom is a wonderful sight but can be highly punitive and reluctant to release any balls that find it. Ultimately though, South Moor is a great challenge, a tough but fair examination of every part of the game. The clubhouse provides a great place for reflection. Take a drink into the conservatory, gaze out and up the eighteenth fairway and wonder how anyone could possibly miss such a wide-open area....

Last night our men's team took on a strong side in challenging conditions.

Both teams battled through heavy rain early on, with many matches finely balanced heading into the back nine.

Unfortunately, a few key moments went against us, and despite a determined effort throughout the team, we ultimately fell to an 11–3 defeat.

Congratulations to Wearside on their victory.

We currently sit 4th in the league and now turn our attention to another away fixture at Houghton-le-Spring next Tuesday.

We'll be looking to bounce back strongly and add to our points tally.

Drainage Improvement Update.

On Tuesday 2nd June, we installed 240 metres of drainage on the 15th hole. This work forms part of the drainage improvement grant we received over the New Year period.

Our plan is to install a minimum of 3,000 metres of additional drainage using the grant funding. As there is a deadline for the grant to be spent, we have begun work now to ensure we make steady progress towards completing the project.

Why Start in the Summer?

There are several advantages to carrying out this work during the summer months:

1. Easier digging – Dry ground allows the trencher to cut through the soil more effectively, with fewer blockages.

2. Less disruption – Dry conditions minimise damage to the surrounding turf and playing surfaces.

3. Better access – The tractor and trailer can safely operate on hills and slopes in firmer, drier conditions.

4. Faster recovery – Seed sown in the drainage lines will typically germinate within 7–10 days, helping the affected areas recover more quickly.

Why Are the Drain Lines Individually Roped Off?

We have roped off each individual drain line (six in total) to protect the newly seeded areas.

In the past, when drain lines were not individually roped off, buggy and trolley wheels removed seed during damp conditions, significantly delaying recovery. On holes 2 and 4, some of these scars are still visible today.

Why Is There No Drop Zone?

We have carefully considered the need for a drop zone and believe one is unnecessary in this situation.

Each of the six roped areas is approximately 4–6 yards wide, providing ample room for golfers to take relief from the low rope and still play their next shot. Introducing a drop zone could actually disadvantage some players, as those whose ball travels further into the drained area would be required to move back to a designated drop zone behind the completed work.

What's Next?

Although the 15th hole will receive further drainage over the coming months, we will first allow the initial six trenches time to recover.

On Monday, we plan to return to the 4th hole and complete the drainage work on the approach to the green that began in 2023/24. With the men's team away next week, we have an opportunity to carry out work on Monday and Tuesday with minimal disruption.

Our aim is to install a further 250–300 metres of drainage on Monday, before piping and gravelling the area on Tuesday.

To allow this work to be completed as efficiently as possible, the course layout will be temporarily adjusted. Golfers will start on the 5th hole, playing holes 5–18 before returning to play holes 1–4. This arrangement will enable us to continue work without closing the hole entirely.

Future Drainage Plans

Following the work on the 4th hole, further drainage improvements are planned for the 2nd, 5th, 6th, 15th and 17th holes.

The 3,000+ metres of drainage installed over the past few years has already made a significant difference to course conditions. Once this next phase of 3,000+ metres is completed, we expect the course to be among the driest and most playable in the North Durham area. ⛳

South Moor Men's Team news - 5 man teams Championship 👏🏌️‍♂️

Huge appreciation to the five lads who represented the club yesterday at the 5 Man Team Championship today over at South Shields Golf Club.

The squad had to battle through increasingly windy and tough conditions out on the course, but they dug deep to post a very solid total of 316 in the 'best 4 from 5' scores format. 🌪️🌪️

That fantastic effort secured us a Top 10 finish, just behind winners, Consett GC (299).

Doing the badge proud today were:
Ian McEntee
Connor Robson
Stephen Gray
Josh Hogarth
Jake Lewis

Great effort and character shown by all of you to grind out those scores in the wind.

Thanks for stepping up for South Moor! ⛳️💨
