I’ve got better legs than Betty Grable.

I had a lovely afternoon performing at Brinsworth House yesterday, the Royal Variety Charity’s home for people who have worked in the entertainment industry.

At one point I asked for a volunteer for a mind-reading experiment.

One lady volunteered… Loudly.

With a little help she made her way onto the Ernie Wise Stage, sat down and drew a picture for me to try to read from her mind.

A cat.

Annoyingly, as an ex-Art Director, I have to admit hers was much better than mine.

Afterwards I discovered she’d been a professional tap dancer. Someone later told me she’d once been known for having “better legs than Betty Grable”.

Best of all, she told me she still has her tap shoes and still performs on that very stage in the Brinsworth Christmas shows.

I thought I was inviting a volunteer onto the stage.

Turns out I was inviting a performer back onto it.

Thank you to everyone at Brinsworth House for making me so welcome.

Yesterday I had the honour and pleasure of performing at Matt and Alex’s wedding.

I’d been performing close-up magic during the drinks reception and then around the tables during the wedding breakfast. Near the end of the evening, the room was being cleared ready for the dancing when I realised something.

The father of the bride had hardly seen any magic.

With nearly 100 guests, it’s surprisingly easy for that to happen. People disappear for photographs, get caught in conversations, move tables or simply happen to be somewhere else when I arrive.

I’d pretty much finished for the day, but I didn’t want him to miss out, so I went to find him and did a couple of things just for him and the small group around him.

He gave me one of the best reactions of the day. Then his young grandson, Matt and Alex’s son, appeared, saw me and excitedly shouted:

“Mr Magic Man!”

I’ve been called worse.

It was the last bit of magic I performed yesterday. And it’s one of the bits I remember most.

Even on a trip to Sri Lanka, you occasionally find yourself performing for a new audience.

This particular gentleman showed absolutely no interest in my card tricks.

The bananas and papaya, on the other hand, got his full attention.

You can’t win 'em all.

I’m back at The Magic Circle this Friday evening.

I’ll be one of four close-up magicians performing throughout the night, so you’ll experience different styles of magic as you make your way around the building.

If you’ve never visited before, it’s a brilliant evening out. You’ll get to explore the headquarters of The Magic Circle and experience incredible close-up magic just inches from your eyes.

If you’re looking for something a little different to do in London this Friday, we’d love to see you.

One of my favourite things about family events is watching confidence grow.

A child who hides behind mum at the start is often the first to volunteer twenty minutes later. Magic has a lovely way of bringing people together.

Huge thanks to Hugh Newsam for inviting me to join him at West Cambridge. Three hours in the sunshine, lots of laughter and some brilliant reactions from children and adults alike.

Thirty minutes before a recent performance at The Magic Circle.

Most people only see the show itself.

They don’t see the quiet moments beforehand when you’re checking you’ve remembered everything, running through the opening in your head, and hoping the audience enjoys what you’ve prepared.

I still get nervous before performing.

I think that’s probably a good thing.

It usually means you care.

Thankfully the evening went well, with plenty of laughs, surprise and some lovely comments afterwards.

I feel very lucky to do what I do.

A few days ago, three magicians sat down in a Manchester in The Waggon Inn garden area to practise some magic. That was the plan anyway.

A couple of nearby tables became curious... Then a few more.

Before long we were entertaining complete strangers for the best part of two hours.

One of the things I love about live magic is how quickly it can bring people into the moment. Complete strangers become part of the experience.

A big thank you to everyone who stopped by, watched, laughed and joined in.

And if anyone happened to take any photos during the afternoon, we’d love to see them.
