One of the things couples sometimes worry about is what their guests will do while the wedding photographs are being taken.

At Matt and Alex's wedding at Caswell House, I spent the drinks reception moving between small groups, sharing a little close-up magic.

It's a lovely part of the day for it. Guests are arriving, old friends are catching up, and people who haven't met before are finding something to talk about.

And occasionally, a small trick creates a rather large reaction.

Thanks to Matt and Alex for having me along. A lovely day to be part of.

Sometimes I forget I’m working.

Last night was one of those evenings.

I was at White City House in London helping Tourplan celebrate their 40th anniversary.

Around 50 people, drinks, conversations, lots of laughter and a little magic dropped into the gaps.

By the end of the evening I’d somehow managed to get around pretty much everybody in the room.

Even better, I had a message this morning saying I’d helped create a great atmosphere and that everyone had given rave reviews.

That’ll do me!

Planning your wedding?

One of the questions couples often ask me is: “When does a magician actually fit into the day?”

Drinks receptions are great for bringing together guests who may never have met before. Magic between courses can keep the atmosphere going while everyone is seated.

I’ll be at the HBK Autumn Wedding Fair at Hinchingbrooke House this Sunday, so if you’re planning your wedding, come and say hello.

I’ll be performing some close-up magic throughout the afternoon, and I’m very happy to chat through where entertainment might work in your particular day, without it taking over the wedding.

I’ve got better legs than Betty Grable.

I had a lovely afternoon performing at Brinsworth House yesterday, the Royal Variety Charity’s home for people who have worked in the entertainment industry.

At one point I asked for a volunteer for a mind-reading experiment.

One lady volunteered… Loudly.

With a little help she made her way onto the Ernie Wise Stage, sat down and drew a picture for me to try to read from her mind.

A cat.

Annoyingly, as an ex-Art Director, I have to admit hers was much better than mine.

Afterwards I discovered she’d been a professional tap dancer. Someone later told me she’d once been known for having “better legs than Betty Grable”.

Best of all, she told me she still has her tap shoes and still performs on that very stage in the Brinsworth Christmas shows.

I thought I was inviting a volunteer onto the stage.

Turns out I was inviting a performer back onto it.

Yesterday I had the honour and pleasure of performing at Matt and Alex’s wedding.

I’d been performing close-up magic during the drinks reception and then around the tables during the wedding breakfast. Near the end of the evening, the room was being cleared ready for the dancing when I realised something.

The father of the bride had hardly seen any magic.

With nearly 100 guests, it’s surprisingly easy for that to happen. People disappear for photographs, get caught in conversations, move tables or simply happen to be somewhere else when I arrive.

I’d pretty much finished for the day, but I didn’t want him to miss out, so I went to find him and did a couple of things just for him and the small group around him.

He gave me one of the best reactions of the day. Then his young grandson, Matt and Alex’s son, appeared, saw me and excitedly shouted:

“Mr Magic Man!”

I’ve been called worse.

It was the last bit of magic I performed yesterday. And it’s one of the bits I remember most.

This particular gentleman showed absolutely no interest in my card tricks.

The bananas and papaya, on the other hand, got his full attention.

Thirty minutes before a recent performance at The Magic Circle.

Most people only see the show itself.

They don’t see the quiet moments beforehand when you’re checking you’ve remembered everything, running through the opening in your head, and hoping the audience enjoys what you’ve prepared.

I still get nervous before performing.

I think that’s probably a good thing.

It usually means you care.

Thankfully the evening went well, with plenty of laughs, surprise and some lovely comments afterwards.

I feel very lucky to do what I do.

This Friday I’m back at The Magic Circle in London, performing as one of the magicians in their Close-Up Show.

If you’ve never visited The Magic Circle before, it’s a brilliant evening out. You’ll experience incredible close-up magic just inches from your eyes, explore the unique atmosphere of the world’s most famous magic society, and hopefully leave wondering, “How on earth did they do that?”
