The Lewis Chessmen ♟️Carved into history on the Isle of Lewis 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Standing on the sands of Uig Beach, on the west coast of the Isle of Lewis, it’s easy to imagine the centuries of history hidden within this remarkable landscape.

The famous Lewis Chessmen are a group of medieval chess pieces discovered in 1831 near Uig on the Isle of Lewis. Carved largely from walrus ivory, they date from around the 12th century and are believed to have been made somewhere in the Norse world, most likely in Norway or Iceland.

The pieces are instantly recognisable for their expressive faces and intricate details. Some even appear to be biting their shields, perhaps capturing the drama and character of the medieval Norse world🛡️

Although the chessmen were found buried in a small stone cist near Uig, their exact journey to Lewis remains a mystery. Were they being transported for trade? Had they been lost by a traveller? We still don’t know.

Today, the original chessmen are divided between the British Museum in London and the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh, while replicas can be seen on Lewis.

So when you walk along Uig Beach, you’re not simply visiting a beautiful Hebridean coastline, you’re standing close to the place where one of Scotland’s most famous archaeological discoveries was made.

Did you know, there’s a teeny tiny Scottish Castle 🏰 on the edge of Achmelvich?

Hermit’s Castle is one of Scotland’s smallest castles which was hand carved into solid rock by local resident Jimmy McRae in the 1950s.

What began as a personal project has become one of the country’s most unique hidden landmarks. A fascinating stop that proves passion and creativity can leave a lasting legacy ✨

Can you spot Hermit’s Castle in this photo?
